Hi all
The previous owners of my house layed membrane and then gravel over the soil
in the back garden.
I have lifted the gravel but left the membrane down for now, and ultimately
would like to turf the area. I have three linked questions, and I am
wondering if anyone can help with them.
1) Should I lift the membrane and let some air get to the (now compacted and
claylike) soil before turfing, or can I turf without exposing the soil? I
should mention that the soil looks a bit 'stagnent'. If I need to dry it
out, how long should I leave the soil exposed.
2) While lifting a corner of the membrane, I can see what looks like roots
compacted in the soil, Whats the best stuff to poison the area with, and how
long should I leave it before turfing.
3) a nice easy one, how thick (roughly) is a piece of turf (so I can get my
path levels correct)
any help for a newbie gardner would be welcome
many thanks

No. I think your in the right place. "aaj" <aa*@aaj.com> wrote in message news:1119255959.cfb6579cdb128a6c0c1af89ae4fc7d72@t eranews... Hi all

Yes. Legacy systems are a bore.
I have lifted the gravel but left the membrane down for now, and ultimately would like to turf the area. I have three linked questions, and I am wondering if anyone can help with them.
We sure can. 1) Should I lift the membrane and let some air get to the (now compacted and claylike) soil before turfing, or can I turf without exposing the soil? I should mention that the soil looks a bit 'stagnent'. If I need to dry it out, how long should I leave the soil exposed.
Nah, just let Membrane implement IDisposable and recommpile with the
using-statement.
If done correctly the membranes should clean up themselves.
2) While lifting a corner of the membrane, I can see what looks like roots compacted in the soil, Whats the best stuff to poison the area with, and how long should I leave it before turfing.
Now this is poor OO. You should mark both soil and roots as private.
The membrane implements the Facade-pattern and you should not be able to see
the inner workings of soil and roots.
Regarding your question, I would define a IPoison interface and leave it to
the garderer to implement it. Problem solved! This is what I love about
systems architecture and interfaces. My boss call it delegation - I call it
leaving the office early.
3) a nice easy one, how thick (roughly) is a piece of turf (so I can get my path levels correct)
Well perhaps turf could sport a Thicknes property that a TurfManagaer could
analyse. Better yet, make it an interface and you could leave the office
before lunch. =)

You are most welcome
