updating a program

134 New Member
Hello all,

I am trying to create an update script for my program, so it can check if there is any update. I've found something on the internet about using the publish wizard of Visual Studio which will create a xml file. And I should be able to get the version of the program from it.
But is there any of you who have experience with this and knows how this works? Or is there a better way to accomplish this?

Thanks in Advance,

Michael

Yea, the Publish tab on your project's properties is what you're looking for. This uses Microsoft's ClickOnce distribution system for your application. Click the Update button to configure updating properties.

Once you click the publish button, your bin folder (I think) will get some files that you can copy to a distribution location. People will run it from that location and it will automatically check it's version against what you have built.

Take a look :)

If ClickOnce doesn't work for you and you need something more exotic, you'll have to handle updates yourself. There's lots of ways to do this I'd imagine.

Hello, I have an in house application that we developed, but everyone who needs to use the program are not allowed to be local admins on their PCs. I was wondering if there was a way to code the application to not require admin rights (for modifying/creating excel and text files as well as modifying the registry)? And I was wondering if there was a way around needing admin rights for creating a setup package for the program?

I have a Perl script that I want to run as a set-user-ID program. Many OSes don't allow scripts run as set-user-ID. To make this script portable, it seems I need to write a C wrapper program that calls exec or system to give the Perl script the necessary effective permissions. How can I make the C wrapper program secure? or "more" secure? The Perl script, which is "-rwsr-xr-x root root" will look at the real user id and then check a...

SUBJECT: How to make this program more efficient? In my program, a thread will check update from server periodically and generate a stl::map for other part of this program to read data from. Let's name the update method as doUpdate and stl::map read methods as getData and copyData. Since stl::map is not thread-safe, we should do synchronization by ourselves. A usable solution is to create a boost::mutex::scoped_lock object in all above...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
