Is my program being blocked by windows firewall?

110 New Member
I have a program that sends a request online to get your routers IP address. I wrote the program on a machine that uses Zone Alarm as its primary firewall. When I run the program with Zone Alarm active it will ask me to authorize its access to the internet and when I do everything works fine. If Zone Alarm is not running however my internet calls are denied and I am uncertain why. It will continue to throw up a connection error until I start Zone Alarm and it begins working again. I also have it running on a server machine using win 7. The server does not use Zone Alarm but rather Windows Firewall. It for a time was unable to connect to the internet then seemingly resolved itself and began working. I can recreate the zone alarm not on issue on my pc but I can't figure out what might be causing the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

How do you mean when you say zone alarm is "not running"? Try accessing the internet via your browser while it's in this state, if you are able to navigate the net still, then there is something deeper going on.

When I say zone alarm is not running I mean the program is not active. The equivalent of it being shut down. I am still able to navigate online without zone alarm being on/running so there is still internet connectivity, however when zone alarm is turned off/shutdown my program no longer reaches the internet to request an IP address or to send smtp messages.

It seem's then that zone alarm has been delegated to deal with specific ports, and when you shut down zone alarm, those ports are automatically blocked as there is no zone alarm running to allow the connection to happen.

Considering this, I'm not really sure what your question is. Having this behaviour on one computer does mean you would encounter the same problem on another. Though it does show that the behaviour is correct.

If you would like to see your program work without zone alarm, then try testing it on a computer perhaps that relies on windows firewall instead for instance.

All the best.

I've been trying to use WebClient to download a file from an ftp server, but kept getting this exception during the call to DownloadData: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. After much hair-pulling I finally figured out that if I disable Windows Firewall the error goes away. I imagine I should be able to add something to my Windows Firewall Exceptions list. FTP is already in the exceptions list (and works...

I have a desktop application (.NET 1.1) that accesses a web service. Many users now have XP and the Windows Firewall and sometimes when the application first starts that don't properly get the app in the exception list. So, is there a way to find out if an application is in the firewall exception list, probably a registry key or something

I am looking to perform the following actions 1. Detect if the Windows Firewall exists, and is enabled, if it is not the case no action will be taken. 2. See if the application and ports are already Exceptions if so do nothing. 3. Post a message to the user that the firewall will block the application and allow the user to decide if he would like to add an exception, similar to what Visual Studio 2005 does with remote debugging.

I was wondering if there is a way to detect if the Windows firewall is turned on for the machine in which the script is running? If so, is there a way to detect the firewall's settings? Thanks!

The problem is this, all of our laptops are running windows xp with the sp2 update. When the laptops were originally setup they were joined to our domain controller. Once joined, it seems, the windows firewall was automatically disabled, since then we have been unable to reactivate it. Is it possible to restore windows firewall when a PC is joined to a domain(without reformatting)?

Hi, I am going to make WMI connection to a remote computer. here, i want to know which ports should be opened in windows firewall (Windows server 2008) to do that. I tested with two machines by opening two ports (rather than creating rules). For a successful WMI connection, I had to open following ports. First machine: TCP 135, TCP 49154 Second machine: TCP 135, TCP 1027 1. That means for incoming WMI connections, Does it use 135...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
