c# function byte* return type

5 New Member
Hi,
I have a question about a function which returns byte*. I want to know if it works ok because my feeling says not but VS 2008 says it is ok.

public byte[] Buff = new byte[1];

public override unsafe byte* AsValuePointer
{
get {
Buff[0] = 1;
fixed (byte* p = Buff)
return p;
}
set
{
}
}

public unsafe bool TestBufOn()
{
if (*AsValuePointe r == 1) return true;
return false;
}

This is an example with no meaning but is this valid? Compiler is not complaining and program runs.

Many thanks for helping
Peter

Hello all, I am writing a script where I need to use the system() function to call htpasswd. I can do this just fine on the command line...works great (see attached file, test.php). When my webserver runs that part of the script (see attached file, snippet.php), though, it doesn't go through. I don't get an error message or anything...it just returns a "1" (whereas it should return a "0") as far as I can tell. I have read the PHP...

Hi again, I'm trying to call functions from a proprietary DLL but it's turned out to be more difficult than I thought. I have this W32.DLL which was written in C by USPS. They don't provide the code so I only have the documentation. I'm trying to call a function called z4date that, according to the docs, returns the date as "an 8-byte character string in the "YYYYMMDD" format". When I run it with this code I've written , I get "Can not...

I have a large record with many enumerated fields. The record is stored in a file and the fields have to be extracted. I validate the data as it's read, but there's so many tests similar to the following that I wondered if it's possible to create a single generic function to perform the validation. Just to keep code size down if nothing else. I'm not that experienced with .net yet so I don't know what's possible. example code reader is...

I need to call a C DLL function. The first parameter expects a pointer to a long. It returns a value at the address of the pointer. The second parameter expects a pointer to a pointer. It creates an array and returns the data it stores in this array. I have tried many different combinations of P/Invoke declarations and none have worked. When I step from my c# code into the c code, oNumRays points to 0x00000000 and when it attempts to...

As if it won't be clear enough from my code, I'm pretty new to C programming. This code is being compiled with an ANSI-C compatible compiler for a microcontroller. That part, I believe, will be irrelavent. My syntax is surely where I am going wrong. I'd like to be able to call this routine to read different values from another device. This routine would be called quite simply as follows: void main() {

Hi, I have a c# application that needs to access c++ libraries, so it does this by using a managed layer of c++ CLI. Anyway, in the CLI function call, that calls the unmanaged function it expects a boolean return value, which it gets, but the value changes! I walked throuhg the code, and the unmanged code is returning false, but when I look at the variable in the managed code it's return value it true. Even after I initialized the...

The incentive for this Tip was an Article by the amazing Allen Browne - I considered it noteworthy enough to post as The Tip of the Week in this Access Forum. Original Article by Allen Browne Traditionally, one has always thought that Functions can only return a single value, and for the most part that was true. Ever since Access 95, we gained the new functionality, through VBA, to have Functions return an entire Structure of values. A User...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
