Wouldn't it be better if you could throw one of the prebuilt exceptions,
such as ApplicationException or ArgumentNullException, and also supply a
numeric errorcode with it. Then the users can check that instead of the
text message. I know you can create your own exceptions, but this would fit
most situations without the need to create new classes. Or maybe you can
already?

We have an ASP.NET 2.0 (C#) application that is divided into multiple
layers. The multiple layers come from having a web project and 2 different
class library projects in the same solution.
I'm having difficulties figuring out the best way to handle (catch)
exceptions in the different layers and then propagating those errors back up
through the call stack to ultimately display something to the end-user.
Note this is an intranet...

I'm discovering a strange behaviour in an C# project using ZedGraph
(https://sourceforge.net/projects/zedgraph/).
After adding a signal to it, it seems that the clr goes mad for some
reason. I don't get a nice exception in the debugger - instead I get a
message in the output window "The program 'XXX.exe: Managed' has
exited with code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)." and the application
silently exits.
I ran the compiled program with windbg...

I was wondering if someone could explain the output I am getting for
the program below. What I expected from the main program output was
"Cat" but instead I see "Mammal". The output is also included below.
I got the same results with GCC 3.4.4 under cygwin as with MSDev
studio 2003. Even stranger to me, if I change the catch statement to
catch a Cat instead of a Mammal, the program crashes in the catch
