Hi All,
I am learning .NET. I am a little confusing about when do I need a
customer installer.
I can add the Installer class in my WinForm project. But I don't know
what the purpose of that. Under what circumtance do I need a customer
installer?
Thanks,
Davey

When you have written an application for somebody else to use, the app
might need to be "installed" on their computer... The installer creates an
executable (usually "setup.exe" ) which the user clicks, and this installs
the app i.e. copies the assemblies and executables etc into a folder of
their choosing, makes any necessary Registry entries, places an icon on the
user's desktop / start menu / quick launch menu etc...
what the purpose of that. Under what circumtance do I need a customer
installer?
In most cases, you don't need custom installer class. The VS setup
project can handle many operations needed during application setup. But
its capabilities are limited. If you need to perform something special
during your install or uninstall, you need to write this code yourself.
The custom installer class is the place for this code. Then you call it
as a Custom action form your setup project. See http://tinyurl.com/y5lk8t for more details.

Thank you Peter. Now I understand. When I using VS to create a Setup
project, during the installation, my customer installer will be called
to performce my special tasks.
Thanks again.
Davey.

Hi,
I wish to create a installer for my app.
The installer must prompt the user to input a Path to a file.
Non of the dialog templates gives me the option to prompt for a file name
and path, with a browse button.
I have added a custom action program, can I make advantage of this? or can I
create a new template?

I am not really sure what news group this should be posted to. It has to do
with a visual studio install project for a c# application.
We have noticed that if any of the files installed by the installer are
moved or deleted that this automatically triggers the installer the next
time the application is started.
While this would appropriate if the file in question were an executable, the
files are actually report files. Clients want to...

I have read a couple articles online, read my Jesse Liberty book but I am
still confused as to just what the best practices are for using exceptions.
I keep changing how I'm working with them and it has now, after 15k lines of

It's my hope to ask some specific questions with scenario examples and that
some of you might offer a little guidance or general suggestions.

Let me preface this with the goal I'm trying to achieve is mimic a feature
of another language (Dexterity used by Microsoft Dynamics) and so while a
filling a drop down list is a workable solution I'd rather do it like
Microsoft Dynamics does and use separate textbox and lookup button.
What I have is, simply, is a C# winform, a textbox and a pushbutton.
On the textbox, on the validating event of the textbox I check my customer

Hello,
I have a solution that contains a C# application that is installed and runs
as a service. The solution also contains several DLLs, some of which are C#
assemblies and some are C++ DLLs. The service application references the
DLLs. The service app also has an installer class that is set up to run as a
custom action in the Setup Project.
I am having a problem with signing an assembly. If I add a strong name key

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
