Marshal data from thread, use...Synchroni zationContext?

_DD
Existing problem: A function that runs on a thread needs to return
data to the UI thread. When the data is returned, that will trigger
secondary tasks, including access to form controls and lookup of data
within a database.

I'm not sure of the implications of using data returned by the thread
within database access code, but I do know about InvokeRequired( ) etc
for access to forms controls. I've used that often when individual
controls are the focal point. Not so here.

In this case, I'd like to simplify things by marshaling ALL data
coming back from the thread. Then it could be used by controls or
other functions with no worries. So the thread would return data
through a 'channel object' that takes care of all marshaling in one
place.

As for the mechanics involved:

InvokeRequired( ) is associated with a specific control, so that is not
relevant.

BackgroundWorke r seems like it might be applicable, but I haven't seen
it used in the context, maybe for good reason.

Synchronization Context seems like a good clue but I have not been able
to find enough info on actual usage to be sure that this is the
simplest approach.

Thanks for any perspective you can provide.

InvokeRequired is NOT associated with a single control.
It is associated with the UI thread that created the control.
In a typical application that will be the ONLY UI thread.

To keep it as general as possible pass the ISychronizeInvo ke interface to
your work thread rather than an actual control.

Synchronization Context is just a property holding an ISynchronizeInv oke for
exactly this purpose.

Hello, I have a worker thread that needs to call a method that only works on the main/UI thread. One way to accomplish this in managed code is to use Control.Invoke. However, in my case I don't have a .NET UI control from which I can call Invoke. I have tried to create a temporary, invisible Windows form and call Invoke against this, and while this sort of worked, it highlighted additional problems (which I have not resolved) and is...

All, Not sure if this is possible or not - I've created a class which performs an asynchronous operation and provides notification when the operation is complete. I'd like the notification to be performed on the same thread thread that instantiated the class. One way to do this is to pass an ISynchronizeInvoke into the class and use it to synchronize the callback. In the constructor of the class, could I take note of the current thread...

I have been learning about asynchronous method calls and I keep coming across this term, "marshal" and I would like to know what it means - specifically. AFAIKT, it means "send" but I suspect there is a bit more than that. Looking to online docs, MSDN talks about the System.Runtime.Interop.Marshal class - but I don't think that's relevant to what I'm seeing. Maybe it is... The following is an example of the sort of thing I've been...

However, they don't seem to really be applicable here, and I definitely disagree with the implication that a) using Invoke() is "polluting the UI thread" and especially b) that the proposed alternative, using the SynchronizationContext class, avoids "polluting the UI thread". If...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
