Use the Notify Icon control in your main Windows Form. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...otifyicon.aspx
You don't have to do anything during Setup.

But, once the application is installed in the system , the icon is to
be placed in notification area. Then , by using context menu , users
can open or close the application. What steps to be done?

So, in addition to the NotifyIcon on the app's main form like Rakesh
mentioned, also add a context menu and tie it to the icon. Still don't need
to do anything to the Setup...

I think the OP wants an icon to be there *before* the app is run (with start
/ stop functions) - in which case you will need to write some kind of agent
exe which does just this and runs on startup.
Depending on what you are doing, you might also want to sense-check that you
application isn't actually a service; I guess I'm thinking in terms of the
SqlServer agent in the systray which simply starts / stops the SqlServer
service.

I have an application that has a form and a few classes. Rather than the
form being the startup object "Application.Run(new Form1())", I would like
one of the classes to be the startup.
The startup class would then contain an instance of the form, to use as it's
UI.
To do this (and correct me if I'm wrong), I believe I need to create an
ApplicationContext object, and pass that to the Application.Run() method?

I have a shared project that contains icons and bitmaps that are used
throughout my suite of applications.
I have to set Form.Icon, PictureBox.Image, etc. using code because the form
designer can't see the icons and bitmaps unless they're in the local project.
This is only slightly inconvenient compared to the benefits from managing the
icons and bitmaps centrally.
