Coming from the C++ world I can not understand the reason why copy
constructors are not used in the .NET framework. A copy constructor creates
an object from a copy of another object of the same kind. It sounds simple
but evidently .NET has difficulty with this concept for some reason. I do
understand that .NET objects are created on the GC heap but that doesn't
mean that they couldn't be copied from another object of the same kind when...

Hello!
I'm reading in a book about C++ and that is something that sound strange.
It says "Pointers have reference-assignment semantics similar to those in
Java. For example, after the assignment
Student* john = michael;
both john and michael share the same object. This type of an assignment is
different then value-assignmnet semantics used by class variables, as in

in .net, if you set annstance-A of a class equal to another instance-B, a
pointer will add to B, but if i want to create a copy of B instead of
pointer, how to operate?

When compiled with Visual C++ .NET 2003 (only), the program below aborts as though no matching catch clause is present. If the copy constructor of A is made public, it successfully catches the exception instead. If I step into __CxxThrowException in debug/assembly mode, it looks like the pThrowInfo parameter created by the compiler excluded typeid(A) from pCatchableTypeArray. It would be reasonable to fail to catch A by value because of the...

Ugh....
All classes are copy by reference, even if you use "ByVal" and NOT "ByRef"
it's still a copy by reference.
Of course, as a consequence, if you change any values of the object you
passed in, the original object is affected.
I expect this with arrays, but not with single objects being passed "ByVal"
to functions....
Is there a sane to get "ByVal" passing of parameters? (copying fields is not

3.0 Advanced Topic Addendum
There are a few cases where the C++ compiler cannot provide an
overloaded assignment operator for your class. If your class contains
a const member or/and a reference member, the compiler will not be able
to synthesize an assignment operator for your class. It actually helps
to think of a reference member as a const member (since it cannot be
made to reference any other object once it has been initialized).

Consider the classes Base, Derived1 and Derived2. Both Derived1 and
Derived2 derive publicly from Base.
Given a 'const Base &input' I want to initialize a 'const Derived1
&output'.
If the dynamic type of 'input' is Derived1, then 'output' should
become a reference to 'input'.
Otherwise 'output' should become a reference to the (temporary) result
of the member function 'input.to_der1()' which returns a Derived1
object by value.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
