What are Printer Defaults used for - where do they come from?

I know this is not the correct NG but I've been trying to get this answered
for a while and can't find someone really knowledgeable about printers.
(Actually it does relate to something I'm programming.)

I'm not suggesting you do what I've outlined below - just read the steps I
did.

It has to do with printer parameters. Using Window XP printer parameters can
be changed as follows:

CLICK PRINTERS AND FAXES

SELECT THE PRINTER AND CLICK PROPERTIES
General/Printing Preferences/Advance/Paper Size
Change to A5
THEN GO BACK (by clicking OK twice)
Advanced/Printing Defaults/Advance/Paper Size
Change to A6
Now when is the A5 used (that is when are preferences used)
and when is the A6 used (that is when are defaults used)
I know if I open Wordpad it will start in A5
If I change in WordPad to B5
close it and open it again it still starts in A5
Check the printer/properties and they are still A5 and A6

Looks like the Preferences are used at program startup.

So what is Printer Defaults?
Where does it come from?
What is it used for?
Thanks for any info

We currently are trying our first transformation from VB6 to VB.Net. Of course, the Printer object is gone, but I'm having trouble finding the replacement syntax necessary to perform similar actions or set variables. We are interested in doing this inline (no pop-up dialog box). Specifically, where how would I replace the following properties/methods of the old Printer objects. Printer.NewPage Printer.TextHeight Printer.TextWidth

Out of curiosity, I tried to check the help file for the property 'Fetch Defaults' to see what it is for. No surprise, it is not mentioned. F1 on the property give nothing. A search of MS knowledge base is equally unhelpful. Can anyone explain what this new property in 2003 is for? Jeff

If I look at the properties of a printer I can find two things: Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults. I believe the preferences apply to my apps and the defaults apply to all users. In a dotnet app: Which does the DefaultPageSetting relate to?

Hi there, Our client has a requirement to print labels from the web site to a local printer. i.e. user logs onto web site and click a print button and the address is printed to a label printer connected to the user's computer. After much searching I think I've come to the conclusion that these are the only possible ways of doing this: 1. Javascript Window.print()

I have made an electronic sign out book for my office in ASP using VBScript. Problem is, when there is a fire we need to check who is out and who is burning. I have been trying to think of how to go about this, perhaps the only way is by having an 'emergency print' button that quickly prints thedocument to one, or even better all printers on the network. That way when everyone is leaving they can grab the print from the printer.

I am trying to get MS Access 2000 to print names and addresses onto a Dymo 400 label printer, I have set the Access Report to automatically select the correct printer, then select the label size of “99012 Large Address”. This works fine but when I move my database to another PC (with identical Dymo printer and drivers) the report defaults to the correct printer but does not select the label “99012 Large Address”. On different PC’s it...

I am just not sure the most efficient way to handle this. I have never used Adobe other than to open a document and read it! I have had Adobe Pro 8 installed on my machine to accomodate this request. I have an Access application, (Access 2000). I need 2 of the access reports and 2 word documents to be combined into one single PDF file. I just don't don't know the best way to do this. I can change the printer defaults using the page setup...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
