checking for number

Is there a standard method to test if a string has a double value in it
without using an exception?

The only method I find is using Double.Parse(st r), but this throws an
exception which is essentially just another goto in your code preventing
structured programming :)

I use ASP to check users data they submit. In particular, I'm checking for credit cards and I also use a server component DynuCreditCard. It basically affirms that the number "could be" a real credit card number. Anyway, I cannot get through the website without having a legit CC#. None of the handful of testers that help cannot get through without a legit CC#. About once a month some user gets through with a blank credit card field. How...

Hi all, I am writing a template matrix class in which the template parameters are the number of rows and number of columns. There are a number of reasons why this is an appropriate tradeoff for my particular application. One of the advantages is that the _compiler_ can force inner matrix dimensions used in multiplication to agree. A _complie-time_ error will be triggered if you write A * B and the number of coluns in A does not equal the...

Hello everyone, I have a bond form that a user uses to enter data. One of my fields, is PolicyNumber. I added some code on the Before Update event of txtPolicyNumber that checks to see if that policy number is in the system when entering a new record. If it is, I want it to display a message and go back to the policy number field. I've tried this code on a policy number that is not in the table and it

There must be an easy way to do this: For classes that contain very simple data tables, I like to do something like this: class Things(Object): def __init__(self, x, y, z): #assert that x, y, and z have the same length But I can't figure out a _simple_ way to check the arguments have the

Does anyone have any coding rules they follow when doing argument checking? When arguments fail during check, do you return from the call with an ambiguous return value, or do you throw exceptions?

have 4 folders that I watch and need to move files from to another location. Three constraints: -Finish time. Make sure the program stops transferring files at a specific time -Number of files transferred. Can only move a certain amount of files per time period. -Folders have a priority. The files have to be moved based on the folder priority.

We hear very often in this discussion group that bounds checking, or safety tests are too expensive to be used in C. Several researchers of UCSD have published an interesting paper about this problem. http://www.jilp.org/vol9/v9paper10.pdf Specifically, they measured the overhead of a bounds

I am looking a way to do error checking on a string at compile time, and if the string isn't the correct length have then have the compiler throw an error. I am working an embedded software that will require individual builds for each device so that the device serial number is contained in the program memory. To do this, the C application must be compiled with the serial number assigned to a variable within the source code file. I...

We are trying to implement a system that checks the version of the application against a version number stored in the database. We don't want the app and the db don't become out of sync. We have tried setting a __version__ variable in the top most module, however, it seems that this is not accessible for the modules that are subsequently imported. There are a several locations in the app where we want to do the version check, but we...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
