COM Interop and structures

Hello again!

I am back for more information, as I am moving into trying to utilize COM to
work with unmanaged code from C#. In C# I have a series of classes to
encapsulate data that needs to be gathered for a report. This data is
resident in an unmanaged bit of C++ code. We want to use COM to facilitate
the transfer of this data to the C# environment so the report may be
generated. MY plan is to develop a C# class and interface that will be
converted into a Type Library that the C++ code can use to put the data into
the C# environment, which will then process it as necessary.

My question is how to represent this data on the C# side, so that it will be
easily used in the C++ code. It is effectively a collection of Strings,
Booleans, and Doubles. I am unsure of how the Marshalling will work on
classes or structures defined in this manner.

This is a sample Class that is already defined in C#:

public class VLT_Q3K_Result_ PKT
{
private int profibusID;
public int ProfibusID
{
get { return profibusID; }
set { profibusID = value;}
}
private int channelID;
public int ChannelID
{
get { return channelID; }
set { channelID = value; }
}
private double measuredValue; // Channel 1 value
public double MeasuredValue
{
get { return measuredValue; }
set { measuredValue = value; }
}
private bool testOrReference ;
public bool TestOrReference
{
get { return testOrReference ; }
set { testOrReference = value; }
}
private int resultMessage;
public int ResultMessage
{
get { return resultMessage;}
set { resultMessage = value;}
}
private int statusMessage;
public int StatusMessage
{
get { return statusMessage;}
set { statusMessage = value; }
}
private int testPulseValue;
public int TestPulseValue
{
get { return testPulseValue; }
set { testPulseValue = value; }
}

This is the basics for the class as it is already in use in C#. Should I
wrap this class to get the data across, or develop a new class, wrap it, and
then use it to populate the data into the class above?

I would prefer to have just one function call across the COM interop to get
all of the data across, so it is better to send a long list of parameters
(40-ish) one time, or to send a structure or class containing the data?

Any hints tips or suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew S. Giles

I have an interop question: I'm trying to get the ICONDIR Win32 struct which contains an array of ICONDIRENTRY structures to marshall correctly. The problem is that the array isn't a set amount and could be any number of ICONDIRENTY structures. The good news is that the ICONDIR structure does include the number of entries in the ICONDIRENTRY array. How do I properly marshal the structure so that I can properly recieve all the structures...

i'm attempting to interop from C# to a COM DLL, and have found some trouble with a non-standard interface (at bottom of post - followed by my C# version). typically COM methods return an HRESULT or just void. for some reason, this one is returning a string (char *) or in other interfaces is returning a struct. i'm pretty familiar with interop for normal params and using IntPtr marshalling to structures, but i'm not sure how this works...

I've got a doozie of a problem! I and others have been trying to figure this out for too long and I've come to the conclusion that I should probably look for some support.. Ok, I have a COM component written in C++ (I don't have the source just the binary) and am referencing it from VB. I would say about 99% of the functionality exposed by this COM component works fine from vb .net but I am having a problem calling a method which has a...

Hello, I am developing classes in C# that are called from PHP via COM. The C# code does a lot of work to establish internal data structures, and I would like these data structures to persist so that I do not have to recreate them each time the COM code is called. For example, imagine a function MyObject.BuildInternalDataStructures() which takes a long time. Another function, MyObject.UseInternalDataStructures(), is called...

I have a requirement to use a dll written in Visual C++ 6.0 in my C# application. In order to establish the link between my application and the dll, I have written a ATL COM Component in Visual C++.NET . This COM component is referenced in my C# application. The COM component statically links with the 6.0 dll. I am facing problems in passing data from C# to the dll through the COM component. Description: 1. The dll exposes a function...

Sorry about the Cross-Post, I posted my question in the wrong group. Hello, What is the simplest way to create a dynamic collection (during run-time), using basic C (Struct data types). Since I am doing C++/CLI interop I wish to avoid using vector class. I am using Visual Studio 2005 C++/CLI, and I am writing an Un-Managed class library. The project type will be a static library (possibly a dll). I have

Hi, I've written a C# dll and I'm trying to return a "List of structures" to my C++ client application. I'm getting this warning while compiling my C# dll. Warning 1 Type library exporter warning processing 'xyz'. Warning: Type library exporter encountered a generic type instance in a signature. Generic code may not be exported to COM. Can someone guide me what needs to be done to resolve it?

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
