Efficiency of EventHandlerLis t

Hello!

This post relates to the implementation of the EventHandlerLis t class.

When implementing custom events in a framework I'm developing, a handling of
larger amounts of events in a class was needed and I turned my attention to
the EventHandlerLis t.

For instance, let's imagine I have 16 public events in my class and didn't
use the EventHandlerLis t, the compiler would implement 16 delegates, each
taking approx. 232 bytes (or about 3KB) for each reference (please correct
if this is false), making the storage expensive.

The class that supports these 16 events is provided as a singleton per Http
request. That is, a single instance is instantiated per Http request and all
request during that Http request are given that particular instance. I don't
plan on getting 1000s of hits each second

According to the MSDN documentation, it is recommended to use the
EventHandlerLis t to store your list of delegates as the subscription to the
public events increase (in an adaptive way, so to speak).

From the MSDN documentation on the EventHandlerLis t class:

"This class uses a linear search algorithm to find entries in the list of
delegates. A linear search algorithm is inefficient when working with a
large number of entries. Therefore, when you have a large list, finding
entries is slow."

The linear word gave some concerns so I decompiled the EventHandlerLis t and
saw they are using a linked list. Why not use e.g. a Hashtable? Perhaps
because the Hashtable is a fairly "expensive" object, compared to a simple
linked list?

Hi all, Normally, I would trust that the ANSI libraries are written to be as efficient as possible, but I have an application in which the majority of the run time is calling the acos(...) method. So now I start to wonder how that method, and others in the math.h library, are implemented. Dave

Hey, I'm working with Dynamic Assemblies right now for a framework I'm building and what I'm trying to understand is how EventHandlerList works. I've read some documentaiton on it, but nothing really useful. Was wondering if someone could shed some light on the subject. Such as, if I declare an instance of an EventHandlerList and add handlers, will it automatically know to grab the events when they are thrown? Basically, is...

dynamic_cast can be used to obtain a pointer or to obtain a reference. If the pointer form fails, then you're left with a null pointer. If the reference form fails, then an exception is thrown. Would "Feed1" or "Feed2" be preferable in the following: #include <iostream>

I'm having a play with EventHandlerList but the documentation is a bit ropey and I can't find any decent examples. It also doesn't seem to do what I was led to believe it would. I was under the impression that windows.forms controls used EventHandlerLists because generally most events aren't consumed so this saves memory. I can add a button to a form, and have this.button9.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.button9_Click);...

Efficiency I've never stumbled on any discussion of efficiency of various methods of coding, although I have found posts on various forums where individuals were concerned with efficiency. I'm not concerned when dealing with user typing, but I am if a procedure is called by a query. Does the VBA compiler generate "in-line" code for some apparent function calls? For example, y = Abs(x) might be compiled as y = x & mask. The string...

I have been perusing various blogs and MSDN pages discussing the use of event properties and the EventHandlerList class. I don't believe there's anything special about the EventHandlerList class in this context, in fact some articles from pre-2.0 suggest using any collection class of your choice. So my questions focus more on the syntax of event properties provided by the "event" keyword in C#. (Disclaimer - I am a C++ programmer working...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
