WebService, Client, Server, DB, versioning....

Hey,

I am currently writing a WebService ("Server") and a WinApp ("Client")
so that a user can use a third program through the web. To do that
the client needs a table from a database.

Here is the setup:

1. WebService on the webserver
- Can access the DB directly because it is located on the same
machine.
- Provides the following methods for the client
1. get the entire table
2. change values in the table on the server
3. if a row on the server is newer that the currend row on
the client - get that row.

Now I did not have problems writing the first two methods but the
third seems to be hard because I have no idea how to compare the two
tables without causing a lot of traffic.
I thought about adding a field to the table or even a field to every
row in the table containing the date of the last change but I don't
think it is possible for me to change anything in the db.
Than I thought to use versioning of a DataSet but than the server
would need to be 'up' all the time and I would need a global DataSet
that holds that table all the time. That does not sound good.

Does anybody have an idea how my client could check if it's version of
the table is up to date?

Thank you

Martin

I'm working on a client-server application where the client is controlling two devices (aka servers) which both implement the same interface contract. We have a set of about 4 assemblies which specify the interfaces and the data types which flow through the interfaces. Initially, we thought this would be enough for the client to talk with the server. In general it is, but when an exception is generated by the server it fails to...

Hello there, I am running a webservice on IIS6, sometimes it runs at a reasonable speed, sometimes it runs painfully slow and sometimes inbetween. The application that consumes the service is vb.dotnet and runs on a local area network. Does anyone have any ideas? Where should I start to look? What could be causing this? Thank you for any help or ideas

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
