sending text to fax?

Hello

I have a server that has a modem, and i was wondering if it is a way to
build an app that sends fax through that modem? ive no idea what to do when
knowing just phonenumber

Ive been searching the net for days and i cant find examples or anything :(

maybe you guys can give some pointers?
