How identify returning user in Forms Authentication?

I've got everything working with Forms Authentication except for one thing.
When a persistent user (i.e. that checked "Remember Me" in the past and
therefore now have a cookie) returns to the site, how do I identify which
user it is?

Do I use something like FormsAuthentica tion.GetAuthCoo kie... or maybe
Request.Cookies (...? I'm guessing the user name is somewhere in the cookie
since the code at sign in was this:

FormsAuthentica tion.RedirectFr omLoginPage(txt UserName.Text,
chkRememberMe.C hecked);

Thanks very much for any feedback.

Ron

I'm attempting to use the context.user object. In my login code, I add an identity to the context.user. I can use the debugger to watch it stuff the identity into the context.user object, but when I later try to check the context.user.identity.name it contains the empty string (""). Does anyone know why this would be the case? John

Hi There, Hopefully this isn't too difficult a question to express here. I have a 3 tier application. 1. Presentation Tier: ASP.NET web application. 2. Middle Tier: ASP.NET Web Services that invoke COM based API for a third party product. 3. Data Tier: A SQL Server database that I can only access via the API. The user authentication for the web application is actually done via a call

Hi What is the recommended way to store a user's database credentials across the pages of a web application so that each time the database is accessed the system doesn't have to ask them for their username and password again We have previously stored these in a session variable (encrypted) and retrieved from their - but are worried about the impact on performance if the number of users increases. Had thought about cookies but worried...

Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to check if a user is logged into asp.net web application? We are not using forms authentication. We are authenticating our users against active directory. I some people use the database to determine if a user is logged in between web pages and check in the web forms.

This is a simplified version of my site. There are Premium users who have access to the Premium directory. Anyone else attempting to access it should be logged and then redirected to the Premium.aspx - which explains the advantages of being a Premium member and provides examples of content. The default page for site visitors is "News/Default.aspx" but only those with cookies set should go there otherwise visitors need to login to...

I am testing ASP.NET 2.0 Forms athentication with user credentials in SQL Server 2005. I don't want to put user credentials in web.config, so the credentials section is commented out. The following is the relevant part in my web.config. <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms name=".MyWebAppAuth" path="/" loginUrl="Default.aspx" protection="All"

There are tons of articles about custom role and provider membership, but they just tear me apart and confuse :( The situation is following: I use DB2, so I wrote custom role + membership providers. Membership provider seems to work. I use forms authentication, so as articles say, I need to do some magic to be able to get roles for current user, because microsoft mechanism works only for windows authentication...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
