Why is Visual Studio slow? Can I troubleshoot it?

Any way to debug why VS 2008 SP1 is slow? Recently it's been really
lagging, even though it's a pretty fresh install, with a few "add-ons",
like:
Devart dbForge Fusion for MySQL, Devart MyDirect .NET, Refactor! for VS 3.0,
DevExpress Tools

But it seems to lag only recently. Especially moving in between tabs and
switching views, etc...

Any way to troubleshoot this? Thanks!

It is more likely that it has less to do with VS and more to do with your
system. Have you installed new software recently? What about security
updates?

Hello Bobby,

Turn off all add-ons and check it it still hands.
Because usually addons hinder your VS performance

I'd like to purchase Visual C# .Net for learning purposes only since it's a lot cheaper than Visual Studio (note that I'm a very experienced C++ developer). Can someone simply clarify the basic differences. Ok, Visual Studio has C++, VB and J++ thrown in plus some extra bells and whistles (I already have some minimal experience) but are both IDE's essentially the same (including the same IDE support for creating forms, ADO.NET DataSets,...

Hi everyone, I am working on converting a VB6 project to .NET, and I am astounded at how amazingly slow Visual Studio is when loading a solution. For example, I have a solution with 11 class library projects, and it takes 40 seconds to load on a 1.8 GHz machine. Does anyone know what is going on? Is there any way to turn off the compiler when loading? Thanks, Bob L.

I'm currently experiencing a strange phenomenon: At my Office, Visual Studio takes a very long time to compile our solution (more than 1 minute for the first project). At home, Visual Studio compiles the same solution much faster (about 10 seconds for the first project). My home computer is only marginally faster than the one I have at the office (P4 2.53 vs. P4 2.4, same amount of RAM). On the slow machine, the CPU usage is very low,...

I have Visual Studio 6.0 stand-alone (with C++) and as part of Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6c. I am moving my development from a Win 98 SE machine w/2x 10 Gb HDD (each w/ 1Gb free), 768 Mb RAM to a 3.2 MHz Win XP Pro machine w/147 Gb HDD (121 Gb free) and 2 Gb RAM. Loading a particular project with Fortran code only with about 80 files and 750 Mb of source code on Win 98 takes 15 seconds until the editor is ready to use.

In the book: "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005" Craig Skibo wrote: "The power of Visual Studio 2005 lies in its ability to empower users to build, test, and debug powerful applications quickly and easly." I don't agree on what concernes ASP .NET Web Sites in VS2005. All what involves Namespaces in Web sites has been disappeared. I know you can still MANUALLY manage them, but not QUICKLY and EASLY. My group builds and maintains PC based HW and SW for in house test systems. Currently we have a copy of VB6 on all the PCs and use it to troubleshoot code on the manufacturing floor. As we migrate to VB.NET from VB6 it does not appear to be practical or affordable to have full blown versions of Visual Studio 6 and Visual Studio.NET on every manufacturing test PC. Is it possible to run Visual Studio.NET from a shared drive? Ideally I...

Introduction This tutorial describes how to use Visual Studio to create a new C++ program, compile/run a program, resume work on an existing program and debug a program. It is aimed at the beginning CIS student who is struggling to get their programs working. I work in the computer lab at the college I'm attending and I see many students who don't know how to use the IDE for best results. Visual Studio automatically creates a number of...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
