What is the best method to achieve this (I am relatively new to
vb.net)? Should I use an ini file or the registry? Is there another
option available in vb.net that is the preferred way? This vb.net
application will reside on our network and more than one user could
possibly run it so I don't think the local registry is the answer.
Basically I just want to remember the options the last user chose on
the form and then use those previously used settings the next time the
program is run.
If user A chose some options, should user B see those?
You could store them in the Application or Cache if you don't mind that
they are lost once the site restarts.
But if this site is used very infrequently, it could end itself
(standard behaviour to conserve server resources) before the next user
comes around. This means Application and Cache are emptied.
Your next choice would probably be a database, which doesn't need to be
"big". SqlServer Express will probably do for you.
Writing to a file from a web-application is tricky: you need to
specifically set permissions on the filesystem as the site normally
isn't allowed to write. For a "busy" application you also need to worry
about the situation where two different users would cause a write to
the same file.
