About a month ago Richard Cornford did an interesting analysis of a
memory leak
in jscript (internet explorer) when there are "circular" references
between
DOM objects and (real) jscript objects:

This message summarizes some testing I've done and their results.
These results somewhat contradict Cornford's conclusions; I haven't

I can comprehend the basics of that subject (pointers, memory
allocation, heap, stack etc), but I am interested to have
references with more details. I have some C/C++ books
and lots of URLs "bookmarked", but all of them don't go too
far on memory management as I would like. One of my main issues
is whether function "main" and its local variables are allocated
on the stack area as other functions.
Does anybody recommend a good book or...

Dear Group Gurus,
If I use a COM class in my C# code, will the memory used by COM object be
garbage collected, or do I have to manually collect it.
Thanks,
John

I understand the basic premise: when the object is out of scope or has
been set to null (given that there are no funky finalizers), executing
GC.Collect will clean up your resources.
So I have a basic test. I read a bunch of data into a dataset by using
a command and a data adapter object, .Dispose(ing) as I go. The moment
the data is in the Dataset, the Mem Usage column in the Task Manager
goes up by 50 MB (which is about right). I...

Hi ,
Any pointers when it's absolute necessary to use it .
Does it has a blocking effect on the code , as GC per se is
undeterministic .
what if GC.collect is followed in next line by
GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers , will it actually block .

I use webBrowser to open a Word document,
when I use this.webBrowser.dispose(), the WinWord Process end.
while I use this.webBrowser = null, GC.Collect() , the WinWord Process
still alive.
I want to ask what's the difference between them.
ThankYou

Hi,
I'm wondering if the GC.Collect method really collects all objects
possible objects? Or is this still a "smart" process sometimes keeping
objects alive even if they can be garbage collected?
I need to know because I'm looking for memory leaks in an application.
It would be really helpful to be able to determine if an object after
manually invoking the GC.Collect is only kept alive because it still

Where are you seeing that? In the task manager? If so, then you are

You need to be looking at the performance counters for this - to find

GC.Collect() not cleaning memory, how to find out what references to lots of
memory still exist?
When all my processign is done i set everything to null and then:
GC.Collect();
and then
GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers();
but it still shows that my process takes 400 MB of memory. Is there any easy
way to see what references that I forgot to set to null so that the memory
cleas up on GC.Collect() ?

ONU (Optical Network Unit) is one of the key components for providing high-speed Internet services. Its primary function is to act as an endpoint device located at the user's premises. However, people are often confused as to whether an ONU can Work As a Router. In this blog post, we’ll explore What is ONU, What Is Router, ONU & Router’s main usage, and What is the difference between ONU and Router. Let’s take a closer look !

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
