64bit issues

We have been developing all of our .net applications on 32 bit windows using
32 bit SQL Server. We are being asked to now deploy to servers running
64bit windows and 64bit SQL Server. Are there issues? Differences? Should
we switch our dev environment to 64bit.

What is the advantage of going with 64 bit servers other than being able to
address more memory?

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Gary,

For ASP.NET application, the 64 bit support depend on the .net framework
version.

.NET 1.1/ASP.NET 1.1 only support 32 bit application. Therefore, if you
deploy an ASP.NET 1.1 application to a 64 bit server(with IIS6), you have
to configure the IIS6 to run as 32 bit compatible mode.

For .NET 2.0/ASP.NET 2.0, it support both 32 bit and 64 bit applications,
also, according to the following statement, you can deploy your developed
ASP.NET 2.0 application onto 64 bit server and configure the IIS to run it
as either 32 bit or 64 bit:

#64-bit support
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa718621.aspx

For configuration in IIS6 to switch between 32 and 64 bit, you can refer to
the following article:

#How to switch between the 32-bit versions of ASP.NET 1.1 and the 64-bit
version of ASP.NET 2.0 on a 64-bit version of Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894435/en-us

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

I setup a new win03 64bit box. Specifically because sql reports rendered locally with the asp.net 2.0 report viewer control would crash because of memory problems in the worker process (very important). Anyway we normally deploy from a 32 bit development machine to the server using a command like: aspnet_compiler -v %virtualPath% -p %sourcePath% -f %destinationPath% -c -nologo

Is there something in System.Environment that can tell me if the program is running on a 64bit OS? What I am thinking is right now is to check the size of IntPtr and if it is 4 then it is 32bit, but if it is 8 then it is 64bit. Thanks, Eric Renken

Hi folks, I have a number of issues with matplotlib and was wondering if any of you had similar experiences: 1. I was trying to use the stock matplotlib package that comes with fedora 8, python-matplotlib-0.90.1-2.fc8 for saving graphs in png format. This failed, because the written files are all empty. The unix 'file' utility reports that the file is actually png but when viewed in any image viewer the image is just plain white. Jpg...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
