Standard exception classes in C++ have what() which returns const char * and they have constructors accepting string. Where is that string created and when is the string destroyed? In the function below, e is a local object so when the function terminates, the internal string should be gone too, isn't it?

I have a WHERE clause that could be an "=" or a "LIKE" depending upon if the passed variable is populated or not. I would like to know the best way to write the WHERE clause to make it dynamically switch between the 2 and make best use of the indexes. CREATE TABLE myTable(ID INT PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED, COUNTY VARCHAR(50)) CREATE INDEX IDX_myTable_County ON myTable(COUNTY) DECLARE @COUNTY VARCHAR(50) SET @COUNTY = 'SANTA CLARA' -- Could...

Is there any way for one Session to remove and update objects in another Session? I seriously doubt it, but thought I'd ask. Here's why: I have some data that is unique per user (or per session - similar to "welcome back, Jim" after Jim logs in) and consumed across multiple pages. This "per user" data lives in a database, so toward improving runtime performance I want to cache data supporting this and similar per user features. Because the...

IE.. Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings Button -> Check for newer versions of stored pages = Never If a user changes thier settings to this, then pages are cached in IE. From what we've found, you have to use the following Meta tags in the HEAD section to stop it doing it. meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache" meta http-equiv="Expires" content="0"

Have loaded balanced web servers that we do not allow to connect to our database. Content is created and pushed to these sites. I want to add a web service that may get multiple requests a second depending on peak access. I have built an XML file from SQL DB and pushed this file to web server. I want to load XML file at application startup and leave it cached if possible (it will vary in size from 1-2MB) and treat it like an SQL table...

Please forgive the cross-post to multiple forums. I did it intentionally, but I *think* it was appropriate given the nature of my question. I'm working on an open source code library to help automate and clean up parameter validation code. It's almost ready to go into open beta. But one last little glitch is holding me up, and that would be the name of the factory class that serves as the entry point into the library: Validate.

A project I did awhile back stored php5 objects in elements of the $_SESSION array between pages that were navigated on the site. There were object classes representing teachers, and object classes representing students that referenced teacher objects. Then I happened to look at the temporary files created by sessions and found much redundant data was stored in each file about the teachers since they were referenced by every student in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
