VS.NET can't create new web application

I'm using VS.NET 2003. I'm trying to create a new project in asp.net,
I've installed IIS from my win xp professional cd. When I tried to
create
a new project, I get an error saying IIS is not configured to run with
..NET v1.1 so I went to adminstrative tools in control panel to
configure
IIS, I select ".net v1.1" in the properties of the website.
Then when I tried to create a new asp.net application, it I get an
error
saying "500 server error" which is an internal server error.
Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem and where I could be
going wrong.

I'll be getting a new copy of visual studio 2005 next month but till
then I have to use vs.net 2003.

Thanks.
