To develop for Whidbey or not

I am about to start a new greenfield application. The big question is do I start on VS2005 CTP or not

I know the final release isn't until 2005 but a cursory glance makes it seem that ASP.NET in the CTP is quite 'close' and there are some great features there that will save me a whole load of time and which I'd like to use today

Does anyone have any REAL experience of developing on the CTP. Have you found major reasons NOT to use it. Performance

Will there be a 'GoLive' type license - I'm sure this was discussed by MS at some stage

A million more questions but this will do for starters

TIA, Paul.

Hi Paul,

I would highly advise against developing a production application in
Whidbey. You run into far too many risks, especially at this early stage.
We're still in the Alpha (pre-Alpha maybe?), and there is a decent chance MS
will change some of the way things are done. Depending on what they change,
that could cost you a lot.

Then there's the question of bugs. Is it your program causing it? Is it a
bug in 2.0? How can you get support on addressing the bug?

And, you already addressed another key issue -- licencing. We don't know
exactly when ASP.NET 2.0 will be licenced in a production enviornment. Could
be six months, could be a year and a half. I hope for the former, but I
think it'll be somwhere inbetween. Can your client wait on that?

It's a great thing to play with, and I'd love to use it too (Generics!), but
it just isn't ready for production.

Where can I access the Page_Load event in Whidbey for a C# ASP.NET website? Since the partial class has been introduced, I'm not sure where I should be putting page load events. Thanks very much!

Secondly what happened to Microsoft telling us that code

I was listening to a Microsoft Webcast last Friday on Whidbey and migrating from 1.1 to 2.0. It mentioned having to use a converter tool to migrate apps to Whidbey. Is it safe to develop ASP.NET 1.1 apps at this point, with 2.0 just around the corner? Will things break on 1.1 apps with the 2.0 framework? I don't know if code-behind pages will still be supported, or will they break in 2.0 when you try to run the app? Thanks.

Hi I understand that ASP.net 2.0 (Whidbey) is going to reduce coding by 70%. Surely this is going to de-skill or dumb down the developers task and open up the task to less qualified and trained staff. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I have NOT yet made the transition from VB 6 to VB.NET 2003. I know some of the general differences, but I'm not yet to the point where I would feel comfortable starting a new project in .NET. At any rate, I was going to get some books and begin learning more about it and try to make the jump, but then I see that Whidbey or VS.NET 2005 will be coming out in the next year or so. How different is this new release going to be from VB.NET 2003?...

Will Whidbey have the features, of a girl i'd like to meet? Will Whidbey be easy to talk to, and rub my tired feet? Will Whidbey bats it eyes at me, and whisper "Baby, your so sweet". Will Whidbey have a body to die for, and look hot as hell wrapped only in a sheet. Will Whidbey have construction workers whistling at it if i tucked under my arm and walked it down the street. Will Whidbey make me feel like a man, and have all other IDE...

My computer was moved last week, and the company changed the network groups we work on. As a result, one of the main benefits from Whidbey (database connectivity) no longer works. Situation: 1. I open a new project based on a windows form 2. I click on "data" and then "Add New Data Source" then I click on next within the wizard 3. I have 3 choices Database, Local Database, Web service and Object. 4. I choose Database, click next and get...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
