sessionState and cookies

I want to use cookies on my website, simply to identify the user when
they come to my website (I will just be writing one for new users and
reading from people who are already users when they reach my home page).
Do I need to put cookieless="fal se" in my web.config sessionState tag,
or does it not matter (I usually use cookieless="tru e", but I never read
or write cookies). This is my usual sessionState :

<sessionState
mode="InProc"
cookieless="tru e"
timeout="20"
/>

Do I just stick with this?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

You can still use cookies if you have cookieless set to true. Cookieless
just means that the session state is not maintianed using cookies (but
instead with a URL: http://yourdomain.com/(23jvd93Vadf)/yourpage.aspx).

Does this mean that with cookieless="tru e" I can read and write cookies
without the user having to have cookies enabled on their machine?

....BUT for _custom_ HttpHandlers. How can I do that? In my custom IHttpHandler, HttpContext.Current.Session is a null reference, and I can't use the session state. It is enabled in web.config and machine.config however, and normal aspx pages can use it just fine. Here's the call stacks for a standard aspx and my custom http handler showing how the code needed to enable the session state is missing. However I don't know how I can make...

What do you mean by a cookieless session state? When you set the sessionState section's cookieless attribute to true in the web.config file, what does that mean? I read this (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpgenref/html/gngrfSessionstateSection.asp) and it does not explain the meaning of cookieless.

*Please* help --- I'm tearing my hair out. I want to use sessionstate in a webservice, accessed from a client, written in script (JScript, InfoPath). I have written my webservice (C# .NET). I have marked the method(s) with EnableSession=true. I have read everything there is to read! I am told that to reuse session, my client needs to receive a cookie in the header from the webservice and then pass this back in all future calls. ...

<authentication mode="Forms"> <forms loginUrl="Login.aspx" protection="All" timeout="30" cookieless="AutoDetect" /> </authentication> Over here we can specify cookiless to be auto detect so it uses cookies if the client supports it or URL mangling(munging) if it doesnt.

We have an ASP.Net 2.0 web application that uses cookies for the sessionState. We have a login page that the user initially logs into and when the sessionState expires. I tracked down all that was taking place in the code. The session "key" is head in a Session varaible. The session timeout is set to 20 minutes in the web.config file. What I am seeing is that the user is redirected to the login page before the session expires. This...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
