Stroustrup's view on classes, for the most part, seems to be centered around
the notion of invariants. After a bit of adjusting to the use of yamt (yet
another math term) in computer science, I came to appreciate some of the
significance in what he is asserting. I believe a good example would be
the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor. In the 4-space of general
relativity, there are 256 components of this beast.
One approach to...

I am using VS.Net 2003 on Windows 2003 Server (standard edition) and I am
getting "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process" on DLL's in a VS.Net solution.
I have made sure all the dependancies and the build order is correct but the
actually instance of VS.Net (devenv.exe) is LOCKING THE DAM DLL'S IT IS
TRYING TO BUILD. ?????
I have used Process Explorer from sysinternals.com to confirm this.

Hi,
I'm writing a windows service which interacts with a separate process.
Basically, it calls a process which creates a file, and then my service
reads that file. The problem is, the external process can take a second
or two to finish writing the file. If I try to read the file to soon, I
get an exception that "The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process".
I could just set a timer, but the time it...

In VB6.0 I was using API calls for checking that a process has finished
and then continue with other steps:
var_process_number = Shell("wzunzip.exe -o " & """" &
fld_ZIP_file_name & """" & " " & """" & fld_import_path & """",
vbMinimizedNoFocus)
'wait until the uncompressing is over
var_process_handle = OpenProcess(&H100000, True,
var_process_number)

Hi,
I have a mdb file shared in the LAN. I want to write app that verifies
if it's open.
If the file is not open, then my app can open the file.
if the file is used, then the app won't open it.
I also want this app to have handle to this file, then when the user
stops editting this file, he can close it using this app.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
