Originally posted to microsoft.public.dotnet.distributed_apps with no response. Reposted here with additional thoughts. --- Hello, I'm writing a Windows service which performs some potentially long-running, uninterruptable processes. When the service starts, I create a separate worker thread to perform the work so as to not block the service control manager upon startup. The design quandry I'm running into though is how best

I have a client who would like to have several pictures associated with one system. I have read about storing only the pathname to save OLE overhead and have set-up a form for my client to browse/add one picture at a time to a system. Now he would like to 'view' all of the thumbnails associated with any system on a single form. I can setup a main/subform scenario, but how do I show all of the pictures as thumbnails. I was using the...

Hi folks, I got a problem that certainly someone had too. After a user request, I (my server) must process a lot of data that will expend some time. During this process I must inform the user the status of the overall process. What I'm facing is that my ASPX/vb file that does this long task is completely processed before some response could be given to the user. Result: After filling the form, the user clicks the button and the form...

I've got an asp.net page that has approximately 1,440 controls on it. You must think I'm crazy, but we need to have the page organized in this fashion. As you can imagine, the page takes a very long to to process, on the order of 20-30 seconds, even though only a small number of the controls are generally visible at once it still has to process all the controls on the page for ever page load. I have been researching ways to speed up the...

Hello all, I am currently implementing a fairly simple algorithm. It scans a grayscale image, and computes a pixel's new value as a function of its original value. Two passes are made, first horizontally and second vertically. The problem I have is that the vertical pass is 3 to 4 times slower than the horizontal, although the code is _exactly_ the same in both cases?! The code itself is very simple. There are 2 loops to scan through...

Hello. We're developing an ASP.NET 2.0 (C#) application and we're trying to AJAX-enable it. We're having problem with a page not showing the page while a long-running process is executing. So, we're looking for a way to display the page with a "please wait..." message while the process is running, and then, when the process is done, update the page with the actual results/page content. We have a page that opens another browser/page...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
