This is a simple question compared to some of the stuff that gets asked (and answered) here, but sometimes its easy to over look the simpler things. I've been working with databases for a few years now, but have no formal training, so some times you just get on and if it works dont worry about it. But sometimes I wonder just how it works underneath the skin e.g. If I have 100000 records in a complicated view and say each record, amongst...

I read a while back that MySQL will only use one index per query. (If this is not so, please tell me and point me to a doc that gives a good explanation of MySQL's current index usage policy). I'm using MySQL 4.2.x. Here's my dilemma. 1) --------- I have two tables that have records with a FULLTEXT index text field in each of them. The problem is the relationship between the tables is a

Is there a way to peform a query search on a database where you type in a word to be searched across multiple fields? a bit like a search engine if you like. for example if searching a stock database typing in the word shoes would bring up all products with the string shoes in the product name, but also in description and so on. regards Lloyd

Hi everyone, I'm not exactly sure what I am talking about here so please bear with me. I am developing a database driven application (access), which will query a database and return matching products. To do this I am simply using a OleDBDataReader and SQL statements to get results from the database. What I want to do now, is search within the results returned by the DataReader. I am unsure of how to proceed. I would assume I would...

Using .NET 2.0 (C#) I'm writing a small app that will have a "Person" class that exposes FirstName and LastName properties. At runtime, a "People" collection will be populated with a few thousand "Person" objects. I want to provide users with the ability to search for people by FirstName and/or LastName. My question: How can I enable users to search for people with the last name of "De Leon". I cannot assume that my users know how to...

Hi, This is the first database I have ever created, so please bear with me. I've created a simple database with 1 column and about 80,000 rows. In each row is a word (basically a dictionary without definitions). I have written a query which works, and is, as follows (you'll notice that i'm not the most original of people) SELECT word

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
