web applications versus. web portal applications

I came across a new term "web portal applications." Anyone can tell me
what's the differences between web portal applications versus traditional
web applications?? Portal applications only runs on .NET platforms, for
ASP.NET applications??

Please advice. Thanks.
John

My Client asked me to put together some reasons as to what determines if an application would be developed as a windows application or web application. I have started working on it, but I would like to make sure I don't miss anything. So, I will leave the question wide open, what are your considerations for developing a web application vs. a windows application? -- Thanks, Brad Simon

How do we define systems programs? when we say systems programming, does it necessary mean that the programs we write need to interact with hardware directly? For example, OS, compiler, kernel, drivers, network protocols, etc...? Couple years ago, yes, I understand this is definitely true. However, as the software applications become more and more complicated, some people try to argue that. Some people argue the definition of systems...

Hi I'm currently developping a University portal that uses single sign on between multiple applications, and I would like to store my users in one application and share them with other applications while keeping the roles unique per application. For our portal, all our users would go in an application called "UniversityPortal", and roles would be created in each course application. Here's an example illustrating our proposed structure. ...

Hi all, I'm sure most of us round here have heard of Dino Esposito - *very* well respected in our industry... I was reading an article of his in this month's VSJ entitled "Architecture guidelines for ASP.NET AJAX applications", where he outlines his definition of the difference between web sites and web applications - you can read it here: http://www.itarchitect.co.uk/articles/display.asp?id=351 - scroll right down to the bottom...

I did my MCAD sometime ago in 1.1, using the 305 manual. I've since moved up to VS 2005. I've created perhaps a half dozen Dot Net 2.0 web applications. (Click on the Create Project link within Recent Projects and Asp.Net Web Applications.) Now I find out that my co-worker has been programming in a different style. He's been using the File/New/Web Site menu item. If I ever noticed that option, I've forgotten it. Could someone...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
