Any Ideas What Might Be Causing This?

I have 2 Access 2003 databases that are exhibiting the same problem.
These are frontend databases with tables linked from a backend DB. The
problem only manifests under Windows Vista. All is good under Windows
XP.

When opened normally the database works fine. However when I have the
database open in design view and try to close it by closing the
database window, Access crashes. Same thing when I try to do a
compact and repair, because Access has to close the database to do
this. My first attempt at a solution was to copy all objects into a
new database. The problem was still there. My second attempt was to
save all objects as text and rebuild all the objects from the text
files. The problem was still there.

Now comes the enlightening part. If I copy the database and paste it
into the same folder so that the copy is named "Copy Of
OCCActionsReg.mdb", the problem goes away on the copy. If I then
remove the original from that folder and rename the copy back to the
original name, OCCActionsReg.mdb, the problem returns. If I then move
OCCActionsReg.mdb to a different folder, the problem goes away.

THIS IS INSANE. For some reason, if the database is called by its
original name and run from its original folder it crashes when I close
the database window in design view. If I change the file name or the
folder, all is good. This only happens under Windows Vista.

I'm now starting to think that there's nothing wrong with the database
itself, or the problem wouldn't go away just because I've renamed the
file or changed its location. I'm starting to think that Vista is
trying to drive me over the edge! Can anyone offer any clues as to
what is going on here???

VISTA ran well for me for several months; recently I have had some
problems (thinking about it right now, it's mostly since I installed
SP1), but none as serious or strange as yours. This afternoon a combo-
box in a free utility called EasyGPS was empty, where it had never
been empty before. Opera's Wand utility stopped working for a few
days. HTAs which I use extensively for utilities with a UI, can't be
"found" when one tries to open them, especially if one tries to open
them from another HTA. I keep a more-or-less mirror of my desktop on
my laptop but the operating system there is Windows XP. None of these
problems occur there.
FWIW (probably nothing) some of these troubles disappear when I run
the executable as administrator; often that's not convenient.

Thanks for the reply Lyle. This problem obviously has a cause, but
what exactly that is escapes me at the moment. I too keep a mirror of
my desktop on my laptop. Just took delivery of my new Dell yesterday
and specifically had it "downgraded" to XP. For an extra $45 I had
the option of getting it with XP loaded, plus the Vista DVD if I
change my mind later. I think MS still has a bit of work to do on
Vista. I wonder how much they will bother though, with Windows 7
being talked about already.

I've nailed it. If there is a bitmap file with the same name as the
database in the database folder the problem occurs. In my case, if I
have a .bmp file in the database folder called "OCCActionsReg.bmp"
Access crashes when I try to compact the database or if I try to close
the database by closing the database window. If I rename the bitmap
to something else the problem goes away. The problem does not manifest
if Access itself is closed.

I've tried this with several databases and several different bitmap
files, all with the same result. Can someone else who is running
Vista confirm if they are seeing this?

I don't have that configuration but here a Vista-Access 2007 with
bitmap combination does NOT cause the problems you describe. So we'll
wait for other Vista-2003 users to report (I hope).

Hi Wayne,

Just tested with my laptop.
Vista Home Premium - Access 2003
Bmp (appname.bmp) in folder where FE resides. Bmp is flashing indeed.

I can however NOT confirm your findings.
No problem with compact here, No problem when I close the db window.

FYI: I have disabled UAC (sick and tired of these messages)
Maybe that makes a difference ??

I also am not seeing the problem with the Vista/Access 2007
combination.

Hi Arno.

My configuration is slightly different to yours. I have Vista
business. Like yourself, I have UAC disabled for the sake of my
sanity. This is a strange one. There must be some other variable.
One that I can think of is that my .bmp file association is with
Fireworks. I think that I need to experiment further.
