Selecting a record from a subform

I have a form for a user to enter appointments with a customer.

Currently -

The user enters search terms (eg name, address, town etc) in text boxes
- and this filters a subform (all customers table in continuous view)
to display matching records. Then the user selects the correct customer
in the subform and can enter the appointment detail to save the
appointment to the appointments table.

However I have a problem -

When the user selects the customer in the subform I cannot get this
information to save as part of the record in my appointments table. I
had imagined they would select the customer in the subform, and this
would populate the customer details on my main form. Then these would
save as part of the appointment record in the appointments table.

I can get a textbox on my main form to populate with the customer name
from my subform - (bymaking the control source of the text box = the
customer name field on my subform) but only if the textbox is unbound.
(And if it is unbound it does not link to my appointments table).

Please help me with this issue before I go crazy!
