Unlinked subreport (as TOC) won't display

I'm having some difficulty and I can't for the life of me figure
out why. I have a main report, rptMain, that contains a report
header (displays the AppTitle), 3 group headers (one is a
header for the "report version" and is being used for a cover
sheet, one is a category header, and the other is an item header),
about 6 subreports in the Details section, 2 non-empty group
footers, a page footer and a report footer.

The 6 subreports in the details are linked to the main report by
an ID field that is an Autonumber. The data is displaying without
error for the main report and the subreports and has been working
for about a month now.

I'm trying to add a table of contents now and can't get it to
display. What I've done is create a subreport, rptTOC, that points
to a temporary table in the MDB file called tblTOC. In rptMain,
the category header adds a record to the temporary table every
time its Format event fires, so by the time I get to the end of
the report, tblTOC is filled with the page numbers where each
category group starts. This code works correctly (i.e., viewing
tblTOC after running rptMain shows the right data).

Now, the table of contents report, rptTOC works as expected if run
separately. When being run as a subreport, I originally set up
linking between rptMain and rptTOC on the "report version" field
which is a Date/Time field that is initialized to Now() when
rptMain's datasource query executes. Placing the rptTOC subreport
control in the "report version" footer nor the Report footer resulted
in data being displayed. Placing rptTOC in the rptMain.Details would
display the data in the report.

I removed the linking between the 2 reports thinking that maybe the
"report version" wasn't initialized yet in the different group headers,
but then rptTOC won't display any data at all no matter where it is
placed. Is it possible to get this table of contents report to show
its data anywhere within the main report, rptMain? I'd hate to have
to have the main report print out to one SNP/PDF file and have the
table of contents in a separate SNP/PDF.

This problem solved itself. I checked in all the database objects back
into VSS, closed the database, compacted and repaired it and then opened
it back up.

The unlinked subreport then began displaying data as expected. Thanks.
