How to update multiple tables w/ 1 form

1 New Member
I am trying to figure out how to add records to multiple tables w/ one form. I am making a database for a Home DayCare and I want to add/update records for 5 tables (Student info, Parent 1 Info, Parent 2 info, EC Info, & Vac Info) w/ 1 form. The unique identifier is the students SSN. So how do I tell MS Access to add a records on each table for the matching fields. I've alread made the the form I just need to know how to get MS Access to populate the different tables based on the info in the text boxes that match the correct cloums on each table. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hi DMagic448. Sorry you have not had an answer to your question yet; I think it tells you that you are considering things 'wrong way round'.

If you have five tables which are related in some way it would be most unusual for the five tables to be related one-to-one (that is, for each of the records in your tables there is one and only one record that matches in each related table). The norm would be a one-to-many relationship existing (as between a student and that student's potential course enrolments, say).

A single form cannot possibly be used to update five tables simultaneously where one-to-many relationships are involved (at least not unless there is a master form and four subforms included in that main form) which is why you have not had a reply to your question.

It is certain that your design, at least to the stage you had it when you wrote your question, is in error in some way. It cannot be correct that you have developed a form before you have table relationships properly defined.

If you are minded to pursue this, and for all I know it could have been a student project which is now past its submission date, you would benefit I think from reading our HowTo article on database normlisation and table structures.

I'm not certain if this is doable in the manner explained below, but I'm certain that there have been Access developers who have done something similar. So whatever insight and assistance that can be provided will be much appreciated. There is a separate Update Query (well several) that consolidate various goods from separate tables for access and selection on a sales/order invoice form. The data which is available is the TagNo,...

I keep getting a concurrency exception the second time I make a change and attempt to update a dataadapter. It appears this is by design, so there must be something I can do to avoid it. Example: I have a dataadapter that contains one table with one row. I change the value of the 'FisrtName' column in that row from Jack to John. I call ..update on the dataadapter it goes through fine. Now I change that same column in that same row...

I am very new to developing forms and queries with Access. The task that I am required to complete is as follows: Build a form based user interface that displays various information from the underlining tables as well as allow for updating of this information. The problem I am having is that all the information that needs to be displaced needs to ‘created’ using a query ie: the form displays information from multiple sets of tables and...

Hi, I have a stored procedure that uses JOINs to return columns from multiple tables. I also have another stored proc that that takes a series of params and updates multiple tables. I used the framework to auto-generate a table adapter specifying both stored procs as Get/Fill and Update. The problem is that columns from the JOINed table seem to marked as 'read-only' so trying to update a row results in an exception. BTW, by default a...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
