Linked Table Data Type Problem

47 New Member
I am linking a table in access 2000 back to a view in sql server 2000. When I create the linked table in Access the "Location" Field is defined as a number. The data in the Location field in sql 2000 is defined as varchar(25). This is causing a casting error in access.

Can anyone tell me why Location is being defined as a "Number" in access when it is defined as a varchar(25) in sql server 2000?

Thanks!

It sounds like there is an issue with the view in SQL Server 2000 that hasn't been defined correctly. Please check that out, you should be able to see how it is defined in the view.

If you would like, send me a copy of the view, and I can look it over.

Hope that helps,

Joe P.

I changed from Access97 to AccessXP and I have immense performance problems. Details: - Access XP MDB with Jet 4.0 ( no ADP-Project ) - Linked Tables to SQL-Server 2000 over ODBC I used the SQL Profile to watch the T-SQL-Command which Access ( who creates the commands?) creates and noticed:

The linked table has a bigint in primary key columns. I've read that service pack 8 on Jet should solve this but it didn't. On patch1 options I only found to map timestamp to char(26) entry for similar problems on timestamp fields but nothing for Bigint. DB2 is UDB8.1 Fix 6 on Win2000 Are there any other solutions? Thanks Klemens

Hello one and all. I have a stored table in my database and the form I'm using is based on a query that draws data from my stored table and a linked table. The linked table is a *.txt file. However, whenever I try to edit data I get the error message "Updating data in a linked table is not supported by this ISAM." I can understand not being able to edit the linked data, but the field I'm trying to update is drawn from the stored...

I am using Access 2003 and are linking to an Oracle 9i ODBC datasource (using Oracle ODBC drivers). After linking the tables in Access, I inspect the data contained in the linked tables. For tables that involve a number field as the primary key, the data is returned successfully. For tables that involve a character field (e.g. CHAR(3) or VARCHAR(10)) as the primary key, I have the correct number of rows returned, but the data displayed...

Anyone know a way to make all access to a linked table, in another Access MDB, read only? I really don't want all the hassle of implementing full access security. I can't do this at the server file system because in some front ends the user needs update access. I want to give users access to the data for reporting with their own queries and reports. I just don't want to take a chance on them

I am trying to create a VB.NET Windows application to move some data from a local Access DB table to a table in a SQL Server. The approach I am trying is to open an OLEDB connection to the local Access DB and then add a Linked Table pointing to the table on the SQL Server and then run an "Insert Into (linked table)" query to add the new rows. I am having a problem getting the syntax to add that linked table to my local Access DB. When I...

Hi, I have gone throught the group and Microsoft's online help and have seen many suggestions but I am still seeking clarity: 1. I have an excel spreadsheet. Column A contains text that may be greater than 255 characters. 2. I have an access database. I link (not import) to the contents of the excel spreadsheet. In the design view in access, Column A has the data type "memo".

I have a SQL database which contains a table (TblA) with a field (Fld1) defined as "bigint". When the SQL table is linked to Access the design view of the linked table shows this field as a data type of "Text". I have another linked table (TblB) with a field (Fld2) defined as "int". I need to join TblA to TblB using Fld1 and Fld2 as the join. This of course does not work. There is a data type mismatch error generated. I do not have the...

If you have access to the database that the linked table is in, modify it there. You can't modify a linked table. Alternatively, you can import the linked table, then it won't be linked any more and you can modify it. There are potential problems with this strategy, as you will be working on a copy of the original table, so any new data that goes into the original table from elsewhere will not be reflected in your database. I've got two tables in sql2005 which have an 'ntext' field when I linked the first table in access97 last week using an odbc data source the access-field type was 'memo' when I link the 2nd table today, it is linked as a text(255) field, ditto for the first table if I link it today if I link the 2nd table using access2003 (and the same odbc data source) it is linked as a memo field

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
