compacting question

I do a routine compact and repair on a back end MS Access 2002 database.
This time I had something peculiar occur. The compact started as normal,
than the following error message popped up (I shortened the path for this
post):

Microsoft Access can't delete G:\......\MW-Estimate_be.mdb after compacting
it. The compacted database has been named G:\......\db1.m db.

It then goes on to explain that the original database wasn't deleted because
it was read-only. I did check and there was no .ldb file prior to compacting,
which let me to believe no users were accessing the database, and it started
compacting because it displayed the Access progress bar in the lower left of
the screen.

I have since been able to successfully compact it and have confirmed through
the Linked Table Manager that the front end is linked to the proper back end.
Was this just a fluke timing thing where someone may have accessed the
database at the same time I was compacting?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

My vote is for the fluke timing thing - except without the 2nd user.
Sometimes it is difficult for a program to know how long it will take
the operating system to do different tasks. Think cart before the
horse. If the operating system is still trying to close the database,
when it is instructed to delete the database... well, you can guess
the rest.

Hello, Currently I am running an Access database on a windows WTS server, running Microsoft Windows 2000 server 5.00.2195 Service Pack 3. This database should be accessible for everybody in our network, so for the time being, I have changed the permission for the .mdb file to Everone -> Full control (I know this is not professional, but I'll sort out the security issues later). When this database is opened, and closed again, it is...

Hi. I have an Access2k sp3 database that is shared with a group of users (it's on a network share). The database has grown to be about 1.3Gb and I want to compact it. I have tried to explain to the users that compacting is a good (and necessary) thing and even added a compact database button on the switchboard. The problem is, that I keep getting an error "Could not use 'filename.mdb'; file already in use". I tried to copy the .mdb...

To further follow up on my last post regarding the docmd.quit vs. Application.quit using access 2007, I noticed that docmd.quit will correctly compact the database (program file) if you have the "Compact on Close" option set for the current database. However, even with Compact on Close set, if you use the Application.Quit acQuitSaveNone, the compacting will not fire. This behavior actually seems desirable, as you can now make a program...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
