Blue screen system halts, CA antivirus, MS Access

ARC
I've dealt with blue screens that frequently occur while developing in MS
Access (really bad in Access 97, not quite as bad in later versions of
Access). Finally, I had a blue screen that mentioned a driver: Vetefile.sys,
and I tracked that down to CA Anti-virus. After searching on google, I tried
a suggestion of disabling the real-time AV scanner, and have yet to
encounter a blue screen while developing. I know I should just ditch CA, but
I'm not impressed with Symantec's either. Has anyone else had trouble with
blue screens and developing in Access?

Thanks again for your time! Much appreciated... I guess this all leads back
to the original question. Could the $30 fee for Registry Mechanic actually
solve some of these issues, such as win restore not working, some BSOD's,
etc.? If it did, it would be $30 very well spent in the short term. However,
I guess there's no way to tell if it will fix some issues, without actually
buying..

There is True/False answer to that. There cannot be IMHO. The things
wrong with any specific machine will be different from another
machine. And the Windows registry is so comprehensive and the way we
can corrupt it is so comprehensive (also DLL hell) that saying a tool
can cure a sick Windows "always" is a pretty ambitious and bold claim.

I used to like the Symantec tool - System Doctor or something like
that name. I ran free CCleaner on my migrated-in-place-Vista and that
did help.

I guess deep down I knew there's no "magic bullet", or true/false answer,
way too many variables when dealing with the registry. Hey, as a way OT
question, any idea how I could get my windows system restore to function
again? Clicking on system restore gives me "System restore application has
encountered a problem and needs to close...blah blah". I wonder how one
might re-load the executable for system restore?

Thanks!

I'll guess that this problem is not just a one file .exe problem. The
file might be there and A Ok. but there are conditions on your Windows
config and registry that are hosed.

Hey Ananda,

Ok, enough's enough! I'm going to buy a new pc today, and when I have time,
I'll totally format the HD on the old one, and reload Winxp, and give to my
daughter!

So on the new one, I should load all software that I anticipate needing in
the near future (Office, Wise Installer, etc. etc.), then do a ghost of the
new system?

Also, I have 2 hard drives on my current "buggy" pc. What I'm planning is to
hook up the boot drive on this xp machine to the new computer as a slave,
then copy over my development folder, and any software install executables,
etc. Not too familiar with vista, will it mind that i'm hooking up an xp
formatted drive for copy purposes? Any other tips you can share?

Thanks so much!

This pc has become much too unstable for my tastes, and developing is
becomming more difficult than getting your teeth pulled! lol

Take care,

Andy

Hi, Ananda.
1. Don't put all your eyes in one basket
That's good advice. Always keep at least one spare eye for one of your
fingertips so that you can see into tight places, such as inside your
pockets.

We recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows XP (clean install), but still required to edit Access 97 databases and so have kept Access 97. We installed Word XP and Excel XP, then Access 97. Access frequently crashes with the Win XP blue screen and the message "IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL". I haven't seen the screen appear from any other program - the computer is otherwise quite stable. It can happen after just a few minutes of having...

I'm trying to screen scrape a site that requires a password. If I access the site's login page in my browser and view the source, I see that it does not contain a viewstate. When my program posts the login information, the response I get is the same page as if I had logged in using my browser. In the page it says "Welcome" followed by my name. The cookie collection returned doesn't contain any cookies (response.cookies.count = 0).

I have the opportunity to rescue a project that uses a mouse to sense the relative position of a machine. The hardware is built...just needs to be programmed. Stop snickering!!! I didn't do it...I just gotta fix it. I need to make some calculations on the measurements and VB6 is my language. Yes, the system mouse will corrupt the measurement, but it's an auditing function and that's acceptable.

These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
