I am new to Access, I'm trying to make the switch from Excel to Access as the databases I'm working with have over 200,000 records.
In excel, when you want a field to autofill numbering, it's easy. You type in 1,2,3,4 etc. highlight this and drag or double click and magic the rest of the records are filled in for this field with the continued counting.
How the $#^%&$%#@ does one do this in Access. I have 2003.

You're going to have to provide more information. What are you trying to number? Are you trying to do this on a report?

Hi Jenny,
If you're trying to fill down records in a table, then you have to create an update query to do that. Access doesn't play like Excel. If you're trying to create an index of autonumbers, then create a field in your table for that.
A little more info might help us help you create a query if that's what's needed.

Thanks so muchly. Yes, I'm excited about this switch, but so unfortunate we couldn't learn this matrix styles! I have heard much about the beauty of Access. Last night I went through about 8 lessons on the training website. All the ones about queries etc. The VBE is something I'm excited about, but honestly I'm not quite there. I will play with what you have written me to see if I can get this to work.

I am in need of creating a field that is numbered from 1 through to the end of my records ~60,000, just so I can have a unique ID associated with each record I can bring along and be able to pick up info from original database through the unique ID.
I will see if I can get the code someone so graciously supplied on a reply to work. I have only gotten as far as the queries and expressions in the training programs on the website!!!

You don't need code for that. if you already have the data in a table, just go to design view and insert an ID field. Make it an Autonumber type then save it. When you open the table, it will automatically create your unique id numbers.
