We have an Access 97 application (client install on workstation PCs) that used to have it's Database backend hosted on a NetWare server. No real problems but it was decided to move it to a Windows based server. we have tried a Windows 2003 server and a Virtual Server and have found performance to be severley impacted on the client PCs. Cannot quite understand why. The clients are Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2 with Novell Client 4.91 SP2 and probably Office 2000 or 2003 installed.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm, well first have you compacted both front and back ends? Second question is this running across a LAN or WAN?

A couple more things just hit me. Are the links from the clients machine to the backend utilizing a mapped drive or direct path? Mapped is somewhat quicker, Microsoft also recommends using short file names when linked to a backend.

Thanks Denbert, will check that out. I think it is mapped drives. The application is unfortunately compiled so we can't determine if the Db is split or not. I think that the naming is short filenames but againwill check. Also, it is running across a LAN (100MB to the desktop 1GB core).

Most of my Access database implementations have been fairly small in
terms of data volume and number of concurrent users. So far I haven't
had performance issues to worry about. <knock on wood>
But I am curious about what techniques those of you who have done higher
volume access implementations use to ensure high performance of the
database in a multi-user 100mbps LAN implementation???

I've been using Access. It's a bit slow, but everything works. I'm at a
point now where I need to decide if I should stay with Access or move the DB

I need to convert a 17mb access 2000 db to Oracle and house it in a
Citrix farm. The issue: we have never converted an Access Db to Oracle
but can probably use Oracle's Workbench to assist with this. Also - the
citrix folks do not want us to keep the FE in Access as the queries and
