I volunteer at a youth ministry agency and help them with their
student database. They have two computers, both running Windows XP.
Both have Office 2002 installed without Access, except that Computer A
had A97. They wanted both computers to be able to use the database,
stored on Computer A. I can't get them to do that, and it seems to be
a network problem.
I installed A2K on each computer, putting it in a special
directory which I called "Office2000 ", so as not to interfere with
their Office 2002 programs. Now, A2K works fine on each computer, and
also, A97 still works on Computer A.
I then converted the student database from A97 to A2K on
Computer A (still retaining the old A97 file in the same folder). All
worked fine.
But Computer B won't open the new A2K file. It "sees" the
file over the network, but tells me that "it is already in use by
another user (not true) or I don't have the necessary permissions to
open it."
Using the Windows Explorer on Computer B, I can see the whole
directory, and I can copy the A97 file into Computer B. (I can also
convert it to A2K, but this won't work; they want both computers to
open the module on Computer A.) But I can't, using the explorer, copy
the A2K file into Computer B; I get a message from the explorer that I
don't have the permission to do that.
On Computer A, the A2K file is not "read only," but the
directory it is in is marked read only, and if I try to unset the read
only property of the directory, it seems to let me do it when I click
on "Apply," but when I close out the properties window on the
directory and reopen the properties window, it is back to read only.
In summary: Computer B can read and open and copy the A97
files on Computer A, but can't do either (open or copy) with the A2K
database.
I'm in over my head, especially with networks. Can someone
point me to a FAQ or other source of help on this?

I'm trying to use the File.Copy() function. It works well when the
desenation file is local (Like: C:\dest\dest.exe). The problem is that when
I'm trying to copy to a destenation that starts with '\\' it doesnt work and
exception is thrown (for example: \\MyComputer\DestDirectory). Even if the
first and the second directories are actually the same- the File.Copy()
