I use a fair number of memo fields because of working in the healthcare field; we're big on Progress Notes and such. Because of this I'm always looking out for anything on the topic. The following is a distillation of things I've picked up over the past few years. To give you an idea, I keep it in a file titled MemoFieldAngst! Crosstab queries, Summary queries, Union queries, and Queries that use Distinct or DistinctRow will all truncate a memo field to 255 characters so Access can perform the required functionality of eliminating duplicates.
Also, if you have specified a format in the field's Format property, this will often truncate the data as well.
If Unique Value Property is set to Yes, Access has to compare the values and therefore Memo Field values are truncated. The bottom line is, if you use memo fields keep it simple! No fancy formatting and no fancy data manipulation!

Hi,
I'm having problems with memo fields getting cut off and truncated in excel, you see. I used a formula to determine which memo field to display because we have 2 types of employees to choose from.
I won't get into the details too much, but I believe that the formula is truncating my memo field when it displays in the report (probably because access recognizes the expression as a text box).
Anyhow, does anyone know a workaround.

Hi - I have a problem with a memo field being truncated to about 255
characters when running a Access 2002 query.
This only seems to happen if I use SELECT DISTINCT. It works ok using
SELECT by itself.
does anyone know why this happens and how to stop it?

I'm adding and updating records in an Access .mdb via WWW .asp page.
Authored in Dreamweaver 2004 MX.
Help is welcome on this one. I have a great set of pages that work
fine, but it seems that insert or update pages don't always work now
on some records . . .
It seems that when lots of text is shoved into a memo fields the
database ID for that record gets messed up. Intial record insertion
goes OK, but updating is then hosed.

Hello,
In an Access 97 database, there is a table that has some Memo-fields. Some
of the memo-fields (not all) with a lot of text in it, display the data
blurred all over each other (two textlines are written over each other at
the same time). These memo-fields become unreadable by this. Does anyone
know how to solve this?

I have a query that combines the results of three related tables. The
memo fields are truncated to 255 characters, but I need all the
information in them. I'm aware that removing code such as DISTINCT and
GROUPBY will fix this problem (as discussed in other threads in this
group), but I need to limit the query results to unique values, which
is what DISTINCT does for me. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Hello.
I am attempting to use AppendChunk() to write binary data to a memo field
in Access 2000. My initial call to AppendChunk() results in a data type
conversion error. Any suggestions? Here is a VBA function which demonstrates
the problem.
Thanks

Does using CStr on a memo field truncate it to 255 characters? Seems
like this is happening with some data in my tables. Is there a way
around this?

Hello,
I'm looking for a way to parse/format a memo field within a report.
The Access 2000 database (application) has an equipment table that
holds a memo field. Within the report, the memo field is printed within
the detailed area. The problem is, the apllication is not setup
properly, thus the users are entering data within the memo field as:
location1 1/1/2005 1/1/2006

Hi everyone,
I currently have an Access database that includes quite a few
long memo fields. When I create a report of my data, Access
does not allow the memo fields to be split with the page breaks.
In other words, if my memo field is 3 paragraphs long and there
is only space on a report page for 2 paragraphs, rather than
putting 2 paragraphs on one page and the last one on the next
page, all 3 paragraphs are moved to the next page...

This is mainly a speed question.
In this example: I have a QuotesHdr table that has a few memo fields. If
these memo fields are used extensively by some users, and if their are a
large number of records in QuotesHdr, should I break out the memo fields
into a separate table? The thinking here is that, for Quotes selection
dropdowns that display all entries in QuotesHdr for selection, I would think
that the entire record comes down over...

I have a table with 250 fields. Of course you are wondering why 250
fields... what could I possibly be storing in so many fields?
I am using this table as a general import table for files that vary
based on user selections. The input files are CSVs and can number from
2 to 175 columns. Each field is usually able to fit into a Text field
(< 255 characters) but every now and then a longer field creeps in.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
