To all Experts - Please Read

MMcCarthy
14,534 Recognized Expert Moderator MVP
I've decided to replace the announcement with a sticky thread.

Again I would like to welcome all experts to this forum. We are gaining some great experts who are contributing significantly to the growth of this forum and I know based on posts both here and in the lounges that those posting questions are in the main very pleased and satisfied with the help they receive.

There are just a couple of points I would like to make which I feel can make this forum even better.

The sticky threads at the top of this forum are as much for your benefit as the new posters.

The Posting Guidelines are there to try to improve the posting of initial questions and to stop them from getting so big that no one can follow them. Please encourage posters to follow these guidelines, but in a nice way. They are meant for everybody's benefit.

If you have any suggestions for amendments or additions to the Posting Guidelines please let me know.

The other sticky thread of 'links to useful sites' you should find useful in saving you from having to repeat yourself on basic questions.

I know there are a lot of other sites out there but our Site Rules state that other forums and advertising sites can't be included. However, if anyone has any suggestions for inclusion please send me a PM outlining the site in a couple of sentences.

One last point I would like to make is that I would like you to discourage any off topic arguments in the threads. If there is a point to be made then most users avail of the sites Private Messaging facility and it can be made there. I don't think it's fair to people looking for answers to technical questions to have to deal with these discussions.

That is not to say that I think there is anything wrong with pleasant banter. It just makes the site more pleasant and inviting as long as it doesn't take over the thread to the detriment of the technical issues and is of course appropriate.

If a situation develops that you think needs to be handled in a more serious manner I am happy for you to involve me as moderator. A PM should get my attention.

Just one final point, if you happen to notice any spams appearing in threads you can report them by using the report button at the bottom of each post. Yes that's what it's for.

I am going to leave this thread open to replies for the moment if anyone has any comments they wish to make on any of these matters.

Thank you again for your participation.

Dear All, Please, this is not meant to be offensive - but it is a challenge !!! I have posted on over a dozen so called 'vb.net' expert / blog sites - in the vain hope of finding a complete, accurate and ACTUALLY FUNCTIONING snippet to demonsrate a successful api call to CreateProcess() using VB.NET. So far NO ONE has taken up the challenge - not even MSDN or MS personnel. I have code that works in vb6, I have dilligently tried to...

Hello, I really admire how the experts that roam clc quickly come up with specific references to parts of C standard documentation. It beats textbooks anyday because it leaves everyone with less doubt. My question is, how do you people do it? Do most of you have hardcopy versions of the standards or browse online versions? Are most of you already familiar with the language standards enough to quickly find what's needed (much like an...

In a word Please Don't OK I admit that was 2 words but nothing in software was ever specified properly. Here are the reasons why you should post in the forum rather than PMing a Community Expert You have no gaurantee that the expert you have PM'd knows anything about the subject you are asking about.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
