User's screen has a "Sort By" option group on it with radio buttons for things
like "Deal Name", "Collateral Manager", "Underwrite r", Closing Date", "Holding
Size", and so-on and so-forth.
But now the user wants to be able to choose up to three of those keys and have
the resulting tree sorted by all three but in a specified order.
My kneejerk something with checkboxes instead of radio buttons - and maybe a
drop down next to each where the user specifies "Primary", "Secondary" , or
"Tertiary" - backed up by VBA coding to somehow make choices mutually exclusive.
Anybody been here? I guess the radio buttons/combo boxes will work; I'm at a
loss for a simple, intuitive presentation.

Haven't been there, but my knee-jerk is close to yours. How about simply
three combos corresponding to pri, sec and tert sorts? You can do the
VBA bit to ensure each choice is mutually exclusive, or not, depending
on the aptitude of your audience.

how about sets of radio buttons in 3 option groups, labelled
Sort first, sort second and sort third.

....the problem with using three combos is of course that some ordered sorts
are inherently disorderly in any given table ...sorting first by city and
then by state for instance makes no sense logically but that doesn't stop
users from doing it ...and the logic necessary to eliminate such
combinations in a 3 combo solution is invigorating at best ...you might
consider using a single combo based on a value list or table of
predetermined ordered sorts instead.

Nah, users should be able to get garbage if they insist on asking it.
It's our job to make it regular, reliable, repeatable garbage.
Seriously, though, the logic would be highly content-dependent, I
expect, so if you want your program to be able to make that sort of
guidance, be prepared for some more tables with business logic.
