"Attaching" documents to records

I'm creating an Access database that is replacing a public e-mail box.
Inquiries are generated from different parts of my company, and
answered by specialists in my department via this public e-mail box.
There are a lot of inherent limitations when dealing with e-mails, so
my management has mandated that I replace the whole thing with an
Access database.

I have much of the work done, but I'm stuck on one small point; I need
to replicate attachments in e-mails as linked files in the new
database. It is easy enough to set up a linked file field, but more
difficult to make it really easy for people to understand.

The way I have it set up now, the user must first save the file in the
publicly accessible network location, then create a link to it. Non
computer savvy users are having a hard time understanding the first
step, as it is much different then what they are used to. Even worse is
that that after this app is released there could hundreds or even
thousands of documents in one of these public folders, which would
confuse them even more.

What I would like to do is automate where the file is actually saved on
the network drive and make the whole process more akin to something
they do every day: attach documents to e-mails. I want the user to be
displayed a standard MS navigation window which allows them to select
the file for attachment. Clicking an "attach" button would then
automatically create the link and dump the file in the appropriate
network folder.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how this could be done, or even if it
could be. I was hoping somebody had come up with something like this
before.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may provide!

Note: I am using Access 97 and have basic VB skills.

start with opening the Windows file requester.
http://www.mvps.org/access/api/api0001.htm

Once you have a file name, generate an
unique file name by code,
http://www.mvps.org/access/api/api0005.htm

now use some code to copy the file_as to your new location, with
the new name.

Store the original file name (for display purposes) and the
unique name for accessing the file in a hyperlink field, or two
separate fields. in a table.

I am currenly developing a web site using Macromedia fireworks, and am trying to figure out a way (through hand-coding) of attaching a javascript function (onClick="doit=false") to each of the links in my fireworks-generated dhtml popup menus. Does anyone here know where I would add this javascript fucntion in the code so that it would be recognized? And do I do it in the html, or in the JS file? The javascript function I need to add is...

newFieldElement = document.createElement( 'INPUT' ); newFieldElement.onblur = new Function( "calculatePremiumOptionTotal( this );" ); In my (dynamically generated) javascript, I've never had a problem with attaching a function to an event using the above. However, what's going on with the above is that the reference to the element object (this) isn't being passed to my function. When I do an alert on the argument within the function,...

Hi I have a class A, with metaclass M_A, and class B, subclass of A, with metaclass M_B, subclass of M_A. A class C, subclass of B must have M_B or a subclass of it as metaclass, but what if I need to 'disable' the code in M_B on C ? The correct way to do that seems to be with a M_C metaclass, subclass of M_B, implementing but not calling parent class methods, or calling 'type' methods.

I am contemplating getting into Python, which is used by engineers I admire - google and Bram Cohen, but was horrified to read "no variable or argument declarations are necessary." Surely that means that if I misspell a variable name, my program will mysteriously fail to work with no error message. If you don't declare variables, you can inadvertently re-use an variable used in an enclosing context when you don't intend to, or

I have an Access 2000 database with a form that is giving me some major headaches. When you open the form, it displays all records and allows editing, but has AllowAdditions set to False so that the user has to use my New Record button. When you click the New Record button, the form presents a new record for editing. My client wants to use the Escape key to cancel changes to new or existing records. On existing records, Access already...

Hi! Okay, so positions on "text/html" XHTML are totally contradicting. Anyway! I hope there's more consensus about "application/xml" XHTML. I've recently learned that Opera 9.0b2 does not only evaluate HTTP header, BOM and XML declaration to determine the character encoding of an XHTML document sent as "application/xml", but also the "meta" element. For example, <http://schneegans.de/sv/test-cases/?case=meta-only-encoding> is rendered...

Hi everybody. Thank you for reading my post. I am having trouble getting "this" to work in all versions of IE (it's fine in Firefox, opera, konqueror, etc). What I would like to do is add an event listener to an element to change its border on mouseover and mouseout. I don't want to use CSS to do this (long story). The problem is that "this" does not work at all in IE for me. I tried to do a try/catch statement and use...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
