Method for updating production backends with new tables/fields

My application is beginning to interest prospective clients. This may be
wishful thinking, but if I have a lot of clients how will I update a
production backend when I need to add tables (for example, for new
functionality in the new release front end) or modify tables with fields.

The clients I talk to generally do not allow executables to be installed on
user PCs. So an executable to do this is out of the question. If by some
miracle I have 50 or more clients, how am I going to accomplish adding new
tables to the production backend or adding a field to an existing table. I
don't want to have to accept each backend one by one and do the changes.
Code is the answer, but how to best implement this.

Of course, before anything is done, backup, backup, backup.....

Advice, suggestions experience on how to best accomplish this is appreciated.

Thanks.

One of these two should answer your question, or maybe the one you meant to
ask. If not, there are other portions of Tony Toews' site that should help
you out.

Let's say I have an html form with 20 or 30 fields in it. The form submits the fields via POST to a php page which updates a table in a database with the $_POST vars. Which makes more sense? 1) simply UPDATING the values for all fields in the table, whether or not any particular field has actually changed 2) running a second SELECT statement and comparing the $_POST vars to the returned values, and only UPDATING those that have...

I have a database on my local machine that I make entries and corrections on. I'd like to be able to upload that to my server and have that update the database that's on the server. What I've been doing is saving the local file as a backup. Then I have to edit the backup, deleting the create file info and all previously uploaded entries before I can import the text file to the server. Is there an easier way to do this so I won't get...

I've been using the dataset designer in Visual Studio to create typed datasets for my application by dragging over tables from the Server Explorer and dropping them into the designer. The problem is, when I modify these tables in SQL Server (typically adding fields and what not), there doesnt seem to be an easy way to update the typed dataset. If I delete the previous table definition and drop a new one on, all of the relationships are...

For years I have been using VBA extensively for updating data to tables after processing. By this I mean if I had to do some intensive processing that resulted in data in temp tables, I would have VBA code that wrote the results of that away to the db, either creating new records or updating existing records, whichever was relevant. This may also include deleting records. Now I generally do this by opening a recordset on the source data...

Hi I'm hoping somebody can help me with the following problem that has occurred to me. Suppose I have two tables in an SQL Server database. Let's call these tables A and B. Assume that A has two fields: a primary key and another holding a string. In table B there are three fields: a primary key, a foreign key (which links to the primary key in A) and other field holding a string.

I just got Access 2003 and have been playing around with it. This whole macro security thing can be a bit annoying. Initially, I was able to link to my backends located on a second computer. Then after I compacted the backends on the other computer and I think I also tired of the macro security message on Access 2003 and selected to not run unsafe expressions. Now I cannot link to the backends on the second computer from the computer...

Hi, I am truing to find a pattern for my Business Logic Layer to be able to work fine win ObjectDataSource's Update method. The challenge is ObjectDataSource is not able to work with an update method that accepts a strongly typed data table as parameters. We have to have an update method with all data table's columns as its parameter. Like what we have here: http://asp.net/learn/data-access/tutorial-16-cs.aspx

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
