This is not a valid question.

It can be stored anywhere.

And each individual MDB may have its own custom system.mdw.

I found that out the hard way. I took a
compiled app to a client's site today with
the mdw that was in \windows\system 32
and when I got there, it allowed only my
userid to log in. I had tried all the login
id's before I left and they worked, but
none except for mine were valid when
I rolled it out. I have some investigating
to do it seems.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx
It can be stored anywhere.

OK, I found it. I opened Workgroup Administrator and
easily recognized the filename and location. I was in
a hurry this morning and did not recall that I had
created a uniquely named system database long
ago. I know where it is now. Thank-you.

It is a valid question. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a
question mark. If you started with a pc with no operating system, then
installed say Win 98 followed by Office 97 accepting all the defaults
offered there is little doubt where system.mdw would end up. And although
one could create many system.mdw files on the pc it might be better to give
them different names to reflect their purpose. Otherwise you'd end up like
my aquaintance Jeff who, since 1998, has named every single one of his
databases Jeff.mdb, but just keeps them in different folders.
Anyway, the OP would have probably been quicker searching his pc for
system.mdw.

No, it's *not* a valid question, as its scope is too narrow. An
answer only to the question asked will solve the problem only if
there is no custom workgroup. And I doubt someone would be asking
the question in the first place if there weren't a custom workgroup
involved.

The question was badly worded as, however much there *is* a default
location for A97 (which is actually different for different versions
of Windows, BTW), that doesn't even begin to cover the scope of the
problem space.

I agree with you both, in this sense. In a broad sense,
it was a valid question in that it came from confused
person who knew not how to narrow the scope to
make it more valid when asked. But I see clearly now
so asking the Q - however poorly - helped me reach
a resolution. I know now not to look in one and only
one location for the system database and that it may
well be under a different name. But to David's credit,
it could-a-been better worded.

Hello all, I am writing a script where I need to use the system() function to call htpasswd. I can do this just fine on the command line...works great (see attached file, test.php). When my webserver runs that part of the script (see attached file, snippet.php), though, it doesn't go through. I don't get an error message or anything...it just returns a "1" (whereas it should return a "0") as far as I can tell. I have read the PHP...

Hi: I am URGENTLY in need of some book or web site OR tool that will help me integrate a relatively simple access application into a web page or pages. This is a time recording system (by project), and I would be more than wiling to pull the updated database down from the Host using FTP on a monthly basis. Its just that I need to understand how to set it up on the web site itself. The Host supports SQL. Any direction you can give would...

I've looked through the previous posts on this one and have verified permissions and location of my Dlls, but I am still getting an exception when I try to Load an assembly. The directory where my Dlls are located give the ASPNET user full control, and all Dlls used by the Assembly in question are in the local folder with the rest of the web application Dlls. Could someone take a look at my error and shed some light on this?

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
