Creating a unique id based on a file number and a count of matching records

I am setting up a database to track incoming shipments by Lot.

In one shipment (lot) there will be several items that need to be
associated to that lot, but need a unique number to reship by.

My goal is to use Lot number - record count, but do not understand how
to get a record set from within the subform. Essentially, lot 1000 has
10 pieces. Ideally, it would be

Lot 1000
1000-1 Item 1
1000-2 Item 2
1000-3 Item 3
etc.

The unique ID would set itself as soon as you start entering data on
that item. I have it working using the autonumber field right now, and
autonumber would work for a while, but in a fairly short time my file
number would get HUGE
1000-24353823 (etc.)

Am I even looking at the right type of solution here?

Can I get a recordset count from a command button (or in this case on
an after update event)?

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff

I have a form with a multi-select combo. I dynamically build a SELECT statement, open a report, and set the recordsource to my dynamic SELECT statement. I count the records returned in the report by setting a text box to =Count(*). This works fine. Now I want to count the unique records in my report. I can dynamically create a SELECT statement that counts unique records. My statement looks like this: SELECT DISTINCT...

I have a report that displays records of real estate properties. It is possible for each property to appear a number of times for various reasons. Each record however is unique. What I would like to do is display the total of the number of unique properties in the report footer, not just a count of the number of records. I have experimented with grouping on the property field and using running sums but to no avail. I have also tried to...

I'm working on a BOM in Access 200 from an example downloaded from from the web. The sample database contains three tables, Assemblies (the list of items needed to assemble any assembly), Components (the list of items recognised by the Assemblies Table)and Output (a table used to display the BOM from a chosen assembly). It works fine but there are no forms. For a user to edit or create a BOM, should there be a form for each assembly of...

I'm processing an XML input file getting a plain text file where from M nodes I got N output lines... It's not relevant but the input file is a recordset coming from a database and the output is an EDI message set. Now I need to put into the output file also some information regarding just the output file itself and not the input one. And it cannot be expressed in terms of input information. For example I need to determine and write how...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
