How do I identify the user locking a record

Hi there,

I have a large 6 MB database that is beeing accessed by another
acccess file executing as the front-end (both on windows shared
drive). I lock the records when a user is editing the item. Other
users cannot edit the item at the same time bcause the record is
locked.

My question. Is there a variable I can access that identfies the user
that is locking the record, so I can print this as an information
message?

thx, Seansan

Hi
I can't answer the question, but if you relied on the built-in locking

you could get the information from the error messages, eg from

(3186 "Couldn't save; currently locked by user <name> on machine
<name>."
(3260 "Couldn't update; currently locked by user <name> on machine
<name>.")
(3261 Table '|' is exclusively locked by user '|2' on machine '|1'.)

Hi, I want my application do different actions depending on the exception it gets. For exemple: I have an SQL-table with a unique index. In case I try to Insert a record that's alreaddy in it I get this exception: "Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'tblTelephones' with unique index 'UniqueValues'." What I'm looking for is a way to identify the exception: in case I get this

I'm trying to determine which user has locked a given record from VB6. I know I can use sp_lock and sp_who, and match up the data to determine which users have locked records in my database, however I haven't seen a way to match the specific user to the specific record. What am I missing here? Thanks! *David*

Are there any problems with multiple user access to the same Access database on a shared network drive? I have 'shared' chosen for 'default open mode'. As for the record locking properties, I selected 'edited record' for default record locking; also, 'Open databases using record-level locking' is checked. We seemed to experience difficulties in this office - just once so far, I think - with more than one user accessing the database on a...

Hello, I'm using A2K and am trying to make sure that my program only locks one record at a time and I don't seem to have any luck getting that to happen. In the database options, I've selected "Open Database Using Record-Level Locking" and the default record lock setting is "Edited Record". My forms' record lock setting is also "Edited Record". With the above settings, I get page-level locking. Can pessimistic

Hi, I'm relatively new to programming and I would like to create a C++ multi user program. It's for a project for school. This means I will have to write a paper about the theory too. Does anyone know a good place to start looking for some theory on the subject of multi user applications? I know only bits and pieces, like about transactions, but a compendium of possible approches to multi user programming would be very appreciated!

I have an Access db application that is intended to present the user with the next available record to make an outbound phone call on. Originally, I had set it up as a "split" database but, due to performance issues, I moved it into one database which is accessed by 4-10 people at one time. However, while the same record was popping up for multiple users at the same time in teh old setup, it has continued in the new setup. In the...

Using Access 2003 and using a form that's mostly bound. I need a way to tell if user-1 is on the record when user-2 tries to open the same record, w/o waiting for the user-1 to save the record first. The only way I can think of is by adding a flag to the record and setting it to true when user-1 opens the record. If user-2 tries to open it, the flag is checked for true, then a message would be displayed to them that user-1 is on the...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
