multiple user access on shared network drive possible?

Are there any problems with multiple user access to the same Access
database on a shared network drive? I have 'shared' chosen for
'default open mode'. As for the record locking properties, I selected
'edited record' for default record locking; also, 'Open databases
using record-level locking' is checked.

We seemed to experience difficulties in this office - just once so
far, I think - with more than one user accessing the database on a
network drive. However, I'm not sure if this was a one-time network
glitch or might turn out to be a recurrent problem.

Also, I saw in posts such as
http://dbforums.com/arch/106/2003/8/851472 that users have to be in
the same security .mdw file for record locking to work. I'm not sure
exactly what an .mdw file is, but that seems to be a network
administration/server configuration user involving user groups.
(However, that may be a different issue since that's a situation where
multiple users can access the database when they supposedly are unable
to, given the database record-locking properties. We're experiencing a
different issue: the record-locking properties are set for multiple
users to access the database, but we seem to be experiencing
difficulties with more than one user accessing the database at the
same time.)

Yes. If multiple users access the same mdb file then you will eventually
encounter corruption of data. Split the mdb into Front and Back Ends - that
is, have all the data tables in one mdb (Back end, located on the server)
and all other objects in the Front End mdb, one on each user's local drive.
The FE mdb contains linked tables, the source of which are your BE tables.

Record locking is achieved using a temporary "ldb" file which is created
and stored next to your BE data tables whenever the application is opened.
All users of the app will use this file.

Is it possible to use Visual Studio to create ASP.NET projects on a web server, without giving the various people that will be doing this full administrator privliges? Each user will need to have independent folders that they can modify (ie, one user cannot change the contents of another user's folder). Access to the server must be strictly limited for each user (preferably to just adding/removing ASP.NET projects). Having a similar...

I am using Access 2K and have created a simple data access page which only works properly when it is run from the local C drive. The data file that is being accessed is held on a shared network drive, and the data access page works for anyone on our domain, but only if the htm file is run from the local c drive. If I attempt to run it from either a network shared drive or from our intranet server, the page loads and displays static data...

I currently have a multi-user access database which is put on a shared drive L: on a Windows Servers. Entire database is one file premdb.mdb. Users access this database from their laptops. Hi I am in a shop where developers are required to work off of a networ share. This is so that code and other documentation is backed up nightly. This is outside the realm of Visual SourceSafe which we also use for code control. The network drive is used as the working folder. This is a configuration this shop has used for 6 years and I do not see it changing any time soon So I am testing running an ASP.NET Web application with a Clas...

I have a test server runinng 2003/IIS 6 with a mixture of asp and asp.net files. On my workstation I have a share set up to the folder where the web files reside. I am just doing quick and dirty asp editing (like I used to be able to do with 2K/IIS5) where I use VS.NET, open an asp file, make changes, save and refresh my browser. Problem is that I get an Access is Denied error when I try to save the file and then the file gets wiped on...

One of my clients has asked me to make a change to one of their Access applications. The application is a Front End/Back End standard app. I didn't develop it, but looking at it tells me that it was done entirely using the Wizards. There is no log-in procedure. They want to amend it so that only one person can be logged in at any one time. So, if Joe Bloggs tries to open the application, and Fred Jones has already connected, Joe...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
