Form based on left join query

Please excuse the newbie questions, but I'm fairly new to Access
though familiar with databases in general (experience with MySQL and
PostgreSQL).

The basic idea is that there is table of products in one table which
is a linked table. I've created a new table within access in which I
want to hold additional information on the products in the first
table.

ie.

Table1 Table2
product_id ----> product_id
description size
price
etc. etc

The query works fine and I can create a form based on the query, and
it "looks good" ie. all records show up with size blank where no row
in Table2.

The trick is that I want Table1 to be read-only from Access, and when
information is entered into the size field of the form, a new row to
be created in Table2 as necessary. In no cases is the information in
table1 to be modified or new rows added to it.

How can I achieve this?

Thanks in advance for any help!

On the form, set the Locked property of the fields you don't want to
be editable to True.

Hi, I'm curious about the computational complexity of a query I have. The query contains multiple nested self left joins, starting with a simple select, then doing a self left join with the results, then doing a self left join with those results, etc. What puzzles me is that the time required for the query seems to grow exponentially as I add additional left joins, which I didn't expect. I expected the inner select to return about 25...

Hi, I am working on a genealogy form. The only table (so far) lists everybody in the family, one record per person. Each record has an autonum ID. The parent form (frmMainForm) displays the data in each record, which includes the ID of the father and the mother (who also have records in the table). One record per form. I have a Tab Control in the form, and in one of the tabs I have a subform (sfmSiblings) in which I wish to list...

I have a subform that works fine until you import it into a new database when it crashes if you try to open it in either disign or form view. The form, "Attendees_Subform" in my application was pattern after the same form used in the MS template, "Event Management.mdb" application that is downloaded from the MS Template Gallery on their website. I narrowed down the problem to the Control Source in the, "Attendees_Subform using the...

I was researching opinions on using cursors in stored procedures and found a thread http://www.thescripts.com/forum/thread143091.html discussing (generally) why not to use them. I took a cursor-based solution and took a stab at writing the equivalent to it as a set-based procedure. I then timed each process using Query Profiler by executing each 20 consecutive times in Query Analyzer (i.e. EXECUTE sp_CalculateRewards and EXECUTE...

Hi, I have created a query that uses a value selected from a list box in a form. The problem is that I need the query to accept multiple parameters as well as individual ones. I tried to make the default value for the list box "value1" Or "value2" Or "value3" so users could leave it blank to return all 3 but this didn't work. I know from looking at the Microsoft support website (KB210530) that you can create two types of Parameter In()...

Hi, I'm an occasional Ms-Access developer, so there is still a lot of stuff that I don't get... Right now, I'm working on a database that stores contractual information. One of the form that I created is based on a query that links several tables. When I try to insert a record in this query-based form, I can only update the fields that are used to build relations with other tables.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
