Graphics in image control (Access97)

I have an app for a client (Access97, all the final service releases
and Jet service packs, full installation (not runtime)), that
displays a graphic in an image control based on a path/filename
stored in a field in a data table. It works just great on my PC for
BMP, GIF and JPG.

But on the client's PC, JPG doesn't work (dunno if GIF works or not
-- didn't try it; BMP does work).

I wrote to Larry about this and he hasn't any suggestions to offer.

Any ideas as to what I should look at?

I note that if if use the Access file open to insert the file name
for the picture into the property sheet, the extensions in the FILES
OF TYPE dropdown do not include GIF or JPG.

Yet, Word has no difficulties inserting a JPG.

Is this yet another of the problems with Office Small Business
Edition (in this case SBE 97 + A97)?

Any suggestions?

Hi, David.

Have the client install the graphics filters for JPEG's, GIF's and any other
graphics files they think they might need from their Microsoft Office 97 Pro
installation CD. The client probably didn't do a custom install to include
all of these goodies for Access on his computer. (Perhaps Word, but not
Access.)

Oops. Wrong CD version. Should read: Access 97 CD, not Office 97 Pro CD.

The client still needs to do the "Custom" install, not "Typical" install to
get these graphics filters installed.

This is why I assume it's a SBE problem.

I hesitate to muck up their installation with Office Pro. I guess
I'll have to completely uninstall everything and re-install.

What a pain.

Why can't MS make their products work?

I couldn't find graphics filters on the A97 CD, but then again, I
now remember that I had a problem with finding them for Word, as
well (it's under the Filters category, or something like that).

I'll have to check that yet again next time I'm there.

Hi, David.
(it's under the Filters category, or something like that).
It's a check box for "Converters and Filters" on the Office 97 Pro Installer
for the "Custom" install. I imagine it's the same for the Access 97 CD,
too, but I don't know for sure.

Hi, David.
The client didn't do the install -- I did.
Excellent. Then you know that it's best to do the "Custom" install with all
the bells and whistles, not the "Typical" install, which leaves users
hunting for functionality later, only to find that the feature they need
wasn't installed and they have no idea where that CD went to, nor what the
product key was, either.
And I checked that, even doing a re-install of Word to get the
graphics files installed. Didn't work. So, I tried uninstalling, and
that didn't work either -- the filters were still listed as
installed.
I just tested an uninstall of Office 97 on one of my computers. Looks like
everything except the product key is still sitting there. Not much of an
"uninstall, " is it?
This is why I assume it's a SBE problem.
You're probably right, but perhaps it's an application integration issue,
too. I've always heard it's best to get the entire Office suite -- instead
of piecemealing it together with additions of individual applications -- in
order to have the best chance for a successful integration of the products
if future plans are to get most, if not all, of the suite anyway.

Getting the SBE for Microsoft Office 2003 is even worse for those businesses
who think they may want to take advantage of the .Net Framework. Visual
Studio Tools for Microsoft Office 2003 can only build .Net solutions for the
Excel version contained in the Office 2003 Pro or standalone Excel 2003
versions, so these businesses will need to purchase more software. That's
more than they bargained for when they decided to go with the SBE version,
because most have the expectation of future expansion of their office
productivity suite without having to upgrade.
Why can't MS make their products work?
You've heard of "planned obsolescence" in motor vehicles? It's like
"built-in obsolescense" in software. Microsoft makes money when customers
purchase new versions. If the current version works great, why would
customers need (or purchase) anything more?

Good luck to you.

Hi David,

Had the same problem 2 years ago and raised it in the NG,
unfortunately no reply.

What I found out is that it must have something to do with the O/S
and/or memory. Had the problem in my Acc 97 app on a PC with Win 98
SE, memory at that time was 128 MB. The same picture was shown
correctly on another PC with Acc 97, WIN NT and 256 MB memory.

To the users of my application I have recommended to using gifs which
worked fine.

Don't know whether jpg's now work under Win XP, haven't tested it.

Regards,
Sabine

As I remember it the graphic filters used to show an ugly progress
bar as a jpeg image was loading. Maybe modern pcs are too fast to see
this. Steve Lebans had a better image display package for A97 on his
web site.

That is an excellent suggestion. I am mentally slapping myself "upside the
haid" for not thinking of Stephen's http://www.lebans.com as a source,
specifically http://www.lebans.com/loadjpeggif.htm.

I have a problem with displaying image files (jpg) on my report. I got a solution from Larry Linson (Microsoft Access MVP) for which I'm grateful, but I still don't exactly know how to link an image control with the specific file - all information: path name, file name and file extention are included in one field of each record in the report source table (data of this shape: \\server_name\folder_name\file_name.jpg). Any help appreciated....
