Updating code/forms on working database while keeping data intact.

RC
I am updating/improving a working database for a non-profit
organization. I am thinking of making a copy of the database at the
office, bringing the copy to my house, making the changes and then
copying the new/improved database back to the hard drive of the PC at
the office. While I am working on the copy of the database at home,
the database has data being entered into it at the office.

My question is: how can I copy the new database back to the PC at the
office and still keep the data that has been entered while I was
working on the database? Almost all of the data that is entered goes
into one table. Can I --copy/export/set that table aside-- , install
the new database and then pull that table into the new database? I am
not familiar with importing and exporting and I don't know if it works
for individual tables. I am looking for a sort of "best practices"
way to make these updates/improvements.

Thanks in advance for your help, tips and advice.

Split the database into two:
- back end, contains tables only;
- front end, links tables, and has all other objects.
You can then update the front end without overwriting the b.e.

There is a splitter built in:
Tools | Database Utilities | Splitter

We have used this technique since version 1 of Access, and never even
consider developing any other way. More information:

Thank You! An easy and elegant solution. Fabulous. I will read up
on this Splitter Utility. It sounds perfect.

This is a general question regarding the use of view and stored procedures. I'm fairly new to databases and SQL. I've created a SQL database using an Access Data Project ("ADP") and I'm satified with the table structure. I've moved on to building some front ends for our users. I'm running into situations where I want subreports to be built from queries that are dependent on the values in other controls. I've played with stored...

Was wondering if anyone knew of any references for solving particular database problems with Access. For example, how to create databases with transaction tables (I know they're not built in to Access, so I want to know how to construct something similar myself), general ideas on keeping track of financial information (e.g. simple nominal ledgers), how to simply append data to both sides of a one-many pair from a similar one-many linked...

Hi, I thought I had this sorted this morning but it is still a problem. My application has a DataAccess Class. When it starts, it: Connects to a DB (OLE DB) If it connects it uses an OleDbCommand with an SQL String and the connection it has a DataAdapter with the command then it fills the DataSet's DataTable with the streamed data.

I'm trying to create an application that will have multiple users working off a table on a SQL server. Since multi users will be updating different records at any given moment, how can i get those changes and merge them into my current Dataset. I've been playing around with the GetChanges method and Acceptchanges but they just dont seem to be pulling over the changes and updating my Dataset. Maybe if someone could give me a sample of...

I have a lot of check boxes. This is an update of the check boxes, I want something was checked, then to do an insert (which is currently working), if something is no longer checked...delete the checkbox join/link that is in the database. So, the insert/checked is working, but the "unchecking" is not working. I don't know how to compare an array of what was not checked. Here is my code: if (is_array($_POST)) {

Hello, I have been struggling with this problem for DAYS and have googled my heart out as well as reading any books I could get my hands on but I cannot find any specific references to my problem. I have been able to successfully loop through a directory reading spreadsheets that insert records into an Access database. The spreadsheets in said directory are all of the same format but have different values in the cells. It's when I turned...

Hi There I'm not sure what exactly is going wrong here. I'm writing an application that retreives a table from a database (tbl_internalfaults) and updates it. (Actually, just the status column will need updating with 'CLOSED' where necessary.) I have been trying to use the OLEDB command builder to build the statement to update the database however it is returning an error whenever I try to do this. I already have a dataset full of data, 1...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
